MARIES COUNTY — The Maries County Prosecuting Attorney will get a nice, big raise in pay when 2023 begins, thanks to Maries County voters who on Tuesday voted to make him a full time county employee.

Skouby’s raise was the only contested issue on the county’s primary election ballot Aug. 2. The prosecutor’s raise question, Proposition A, was approved by 62.67 percent of the votes cast, as 1,128 voters said yes and 619 (34.39 percent) said no.

On Tuesday 1,800 registered voters made the trip to the polls for a 29.19 percent voter turnout.

Other winners in Maries County included U.S. Senate Republican candidates Eric Schmitt with 657 votes (42.03 percent), followed by Eric Greitens 367 votes (23.48 percent) and Vicky Hartzler 360 votes (23.03 percent). On the Democrat ballot, which only 233 voters selected, Trudy Busch Valentine had 102 votes (43.78 percent), and Lucas Kunce followed with 84 votes.

U.S. Rep. in Congress 3rd District Blaine Luetkemeyer won 73.31 percent of the vote by Republican voters. On the Democrat ballot, Bethany Mann won 42.06 percent and Jon Karlen followed with 24.24 percent.

In Maries County, the race on the Republican ballot for State Senate 16th District was a close one. Justin Brown received 740 votes, but was narrowly edged in the county by Suzie Pollock, who received 749 votes.

In the Republican contest for State Representative 143 District, Bennie Cook of Texas County defeated all comers with 893 votes (57.13 percent). Phelps County candidates on the same ballot Christopher Davis received 257 votes (17.08 percent) and Phillip Lohmann received 256 votes (16.38 percent).

As election day Aug. 2 was coming to a close for the busy county clerk’s office, County Clerk Rhonda Rodgers said thanks to all of the election workers for the great job they did on Tuesday. “This has probably been the smoothest primary election I have been through.”
