VMS Track teams sweep team titles at Fatima

WESTPHALIA — Opening their season under overcast skies Saturday morning at Fatima High School in Westphalia, David Martin’s Vienna Middle School (VMS) Eagles and Lady Eagles looked to leave Osage County with some team hardware.

Once the final athlete crossed the finish line, both VMS track teams topped their respective team standings sending the championship plaques south on Highway 63 back to Vienna.

Edging Fatima’s Comets by five points with 171 team points, VMS’ Eagles placed fourth or higher in all but two events.

Weston Schwartze sprinted his way to a third-place medal in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 14.46.

Clay Curler (10th, 16.59) and Walker Jeremy (12th, 18.14) also sprinted down the track for the Eagles.

Schwartze also posted a fourth-place time of 30.18 in the boys 200m dash while Jack Stratman picked up more team points for the Eagles with a sixth-place time of 31.23.

Alex Wieberg nearly left with gold from the boys 400m dash placing second in a time of 1:03.79.

Stratman (5th, 1:13.34) and Cooper Kleffner (7th, 1:21.06) also scored team points for Vienna in the event.

Paxten Jeremy won the boys 800m run for the Eagles in a time of 2:26.95 while teammates David Martin (5th, 3:12.31) and Gunter Rowden (6th, 3:30.94) also picked up team points for Vienna.

Adding to his win in the 800m run, Paxten Jeremy also won the boys 1600m run in a time of 5:25.71 with Eagle teammate Eli Messersmith placing second in 5:57.47.

Sprinting to silver in the boys 4x100m relay was the Eagle relay team of Adam Kraemer, Parker James, Dreygen Messersmith and Wieberg.

Vienna also won the boys 4x200m relay in 1:56.01.

VMS also claimed gold in the boys 4x400m relay with a time of 4:41.88 by the team of Tanner Hallahan, Dreygen Messersmith, Eli Messersmith and Wieberg.

Nearly completing a clean sweep of all four relay races, the Eagle 4x800m relay team of Paxten Jeremy, Eli Messersmith, Dreygen Messersmith and Tanner Hallahan also won their race in a time of 10:39.21.

Wieberg won the boys high jump clearing 1.45m while Hallahan (3rd, 1.30m) and James (4th, 1.30m) also scored team points in the event for Vienna.

James (1st, 9.20m) and Hallahan (2nd. 8.74m) claimed the top two spots for Vienna in the boys triple jump.

Martin posted a pair of third-place distances in the boys shot put (7.00m) and discus (21.00m).

Topping the field by almost 40 points, VMS’ Lady Eagles finished with 165 team points while winning six events.

Seeing her brother Paxten win both the boys 800m and 1600m runs, Emerson Jeremy duplicated the feat in the girls 800m run for the Lady Eagles with a winning time of 3:02.73.

Sophia Neubert made it a clean sweep of the distance events for VMS with a first-place time of 6:44.07 in the girls 1600m run.

Elise Kilmer (3rd, 3:29.21) and Riley McKinnon (7th, 3:50.76) also added team points for the Lady Eagles in the girls 800m run.

Clara Jones (4th, 7:33.97) and Kaitlyn Carpenter (7th, 8:09.73) added additional team points to go with Neubert’s win in the girls mile.

Liberty Rowden, Scarlett Weeks, Alexis Curtis and Rowan Walker sprinted to a third-place time of 1:01.23 for VMS Lady Eagles in the girls 4x100m relay.

Also taking third in the girls 4x200m relay was the VMS Lady Eagle team of Grace Barnhart, Raleigh Walker, Weeks and Curtis in a time of 5:16.29.

Topping the field by over a minute in the girls 4x800m relay was the VMS Lady Eagle team of Lilly Williams, Emerson Jeremy, Clara Jones and Carpenter in a time of 13:14.88.

Ending the meet on the track with a winning time of 5:16.29 in the girls 4x400m relay was the Lady Eagle relay team of Emerson Jeremy, Neubert, Barnhart and Jones.

Curtis cleared 1.30m in the girls high jump to place second while Neubert and Barnhart tied for third in the girls pole vault clearing 1.83m.

Raleigh Walker sprinted to a third-place time of 16.14 in the girls 100m dash while Allison Campbell also added a team point with an eighth-place time of 18.86.

Barnhart claimed bronze in the girls 200m dash with a third-place time of 31.84.

Weeks (1st, 8.46m) and Curtis (2nd, 8.06m) claimed the top two spots in the girls triple jump.

Rowden (1st, 9.26m), Grace Veasman (2nd, 6.80m) and McKinnon (3rd, 5.99m) swept the top three spots for Vienna in the girls shot put.

Veasman also added a silver medal in the girls discus with a throw of 16.00m.

Weather permitting, VMS is scheduled to return to action this Friday at the Blair Oaks Middle School Invitational.
