Vienna’s Eagles improve to 5-0 after Saturday shutouts over Richland, Stover

That is what Cory Nicholson’s Vienna Eagles got to enjoy Saturday afternoon with their scheduled doubleheader with Richland and Stover moved to Vienna City Park.

Opening the twin bill against Stover’s Bulldogs as the visiting team, Vienna took full advantage plating five runs for an early 5-0 lead before Stover took their first at bat.

Tanner Nichols earned the win pitching four innings allowing no runs on two hits to go with three walks and five strikeouts.

Troy Wulff picked up two strikeouts in relief before Landon Kloeppel picked up the final out of Vienna’s 11-0 shutout over Stover.

Eagles singling and scoring in the five-run top of the first included Tanner Bock, Will Veasman and Kloeppel.

Eli Hayes also reached on an error and scored while Troy Wulff was hit by a pitch before scoring.

After Nichols struck out the side in the bottom of the first, Vienna added a run to their lead in the top of the second inning when Hayes singled and scored while Wulff reached on an error.

Pitching around a one-out double in the bottom of the second inning, Nichols gave his Eagle offense a chance to add to their lead.

Nichols helped his own cause drawing a one-out walk before scoring when Hayes reached on an error.

Duncan Wilkinson started a two-out rally with a walk before scoring on the same error as Nichols.

Kloeppel capped Vienna’s four-run top of the third inning by doubling and scoring on a Bock RBI single.

Vienna capped their scoring against Stover in the top of the fourth inning when Gabe Kleffner walked and scored after Hayes reached on an error.

Facing Richland’s Bears in the night cap of their Saturday doubleheader, Vienna used a nine-run bottom of the fourth inning to eventually hand their Pulaski County foes a 14-0 loss in five innings.

Will Veasman earned the win pitching four innings of shutout baseball while allowing three hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts.

Wilkinson pitched the top of the fifth allowing no hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

After Veasman struck out the side in the top of the first inning, Vienna’s offense looked to give him an early lead in the bottom half of the frame.

Wilkinson reached on an error before scoring when Hayes also reached on also reached on another Richland error.

Kloeppel delivered the blow of the inning with a RBI double down the left-field line scoring Hayes giving Vienna an early 2-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, the host Eagles went back to work in the bottom of the third.

Hayes reached on an error with one out before back-to-back walks to Kloeppel and Bock loaded the bases for Wulff.

Lifting a RBI sacrifice fly to left field scoring Hayes, Vienna now had a 3-0 lead.

Veasman then helped his own cause with a two-RBI single scoring Kloeppel and Bock for a 5-0 Eagle lead.

Six hits and five walks in the bottom of the fourth gave Vienna their final margin of victory.
