Vienna voters said “yes” on Tuesday to the city’s request to pass a half-cent sales tax to support the Vienna Police Department and public safety.
Voter turnout at Tuesday’s election was sparse, but those who made the trip to the Knights Hall to vote largely were in favor of the sales tax. There were 28 'YES' votes and nine 'NO' votes.
After the votes were counted, Vienna Police Chief Shannon Thompson thanked the voters, saying the city appreciates it.
“I think it will help us enhance safety and help us get into a more modern time and help us take care of our people,” he said. “It will benefit the city in other places.”
The proposed sales tax is anticipated to bring in an additional $55,000 to $59,000 annually. This is the second time the city has asked residents to increase the city’s sales tax to provide more funding. Last time it was defeated by 10 votes. The city council was hoping voters would be more receptive this time.
The sales tax will add money to the police budget for much needed equipment, computer software, vehicles, and to offer more competitive salaries to attract and retain quality personnel.
Passage of the half-cent sales tax takes the $55,000 to $59,000 burden from the general revenue fund, which can be used for a variety of needs within the city.
Collection of the sales tax will begin in July 2021.
