Starting a new winning streak last Thursday with a 7-2 road win at Dixon, Jessica Gibbs’ Vienna Lady Eagle softball team looked to add to it during the annual Vienna Softball Tournament held Saturday at Vienna City Park.
Dispatching Waynesville 7-2 and Hartville 5-0 in earlier tournament action, Vienna looked to go undefeated on their home field facing St. James’ Lady Tigers in the final game of the four-team event.
Defeating St. James 15-2 nearly a week ago, the black and gold put seven runs on the board Saturday in the bottom of the first inning before going on to a tournament-title clinching 17-0 victory in three innings.
Sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, Lady Eagles drawing walks and scoring included Aubrey Rehmert, Marissa Hollis, Aubrey Schwartze, Kenna Roberds and Addie James.
Savannah Perkins also singled and scored while Delaney Schwartze was hit by a pitch before also crossing the plate during Vienna’s seven-run bottom of the first inning.
A total of 14 batters went to the plate in the bottom of the second leading to 10 Vienna runs on four hits, eight walks and a hit batter.
Schwartze delivered the big blow in the winning with a bases-clearing triple.
Striking out four St. James batters over three innings, James earned the win pitching a complete-game shutout retiring the final six batters she faced.
“We had a great day of softball today,” Gibbs said. “Everyone up and down the lineup made contributions during all three games and we have to have that in order to keep winning.”
Rehmert recorded a pair of runs batted in (RBI) while drawing three walks and scoring two runs.
Ella Hollis led the Lady Eagle offense against St. James with two hits, a run scored and a team high four RBIs.
Marissa Hollis walked twice and scored a pair of runs while Aubrey Schwartze scored three runs and drove in three more while also drawing a walk.
Roberds also walked and scored twice for VHS while Perkins drew a pair of walks and scored two runs to go with a hit and a RBI.
Delaney Schwartze scored a pair of runs and drove in two more on a hit and two walks.
Kaylee Bresnahan also walked driving in a run while scoring another one.
Against Hartville, three runs in the top of the first inning gave Delaney Schwartze more than enough run support helping her pitch a complete-game shutout during Vienna’s 5-0 victory.
Rehmert doubled and scored the game’s first run for Vienna on an error before a Marissa Hollis single led to an Aubrey Schwartze two-run home run to left-center field giving the black and gold Lady Eagles an early lead before Hartville’s first plate appearance.
Delaney Schwartze pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning keeping the blue and white Eagles off the scoreboard.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, Vienna added a run to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Roberds doubled and scored on a passed ball bumping the VHS lead to 4-0.
Vienna scored their final run against Hartville in the top of the sixth inning when Ella Hollis doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly giving VHS their final margin of victory.
In their tournament opener against Waynesville, Vienna also plated three runs in the top of the first inning before posting single tally marks throughout the rest of their 7-2 win over the Lady Tigers in five innings due to the tournament time limit rule.
Allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts, James earned the complete-game victory against Waynesville.
Rehmert was hit by a pitch before scoring Vienna’s first run against Waynesville on a wild pitch while Ella Hollis walked and scored on a RBI ground out off the bat of Roberds.
Marissa Hollis then singled and scored on a Perkins RBI single for VHS’ third run of the frame.
James singled and scored on an Ella Hollis RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the second before Aubrey Schwartze walked and scored in both the top of the third and fifth innings.
Ella Hollis launched a solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning.
Going for their second tournament title in as many Saturdays, Vienna will compete in the Owensville Dutchgirl Softball Tournament Saturday morning with their first game at 9:45 a.m., against Lutheran South before opening the afternoon portion of the tournament against Pacific’s Lady Indians at approximately 1:05 p.m.
Vienna will cap their portion of the tournament facing the host Dutchgirls at 4:25 p.m.
