Vienna Senior Center volunteers host Imagine Italy the pandemic way — a drive through dining event

VIENNA — A group of 25 volunteers gathered at the Vienna Senior Center Saturday and worked the pandemic-style Imagine Italy fundraiser by hosting a drive through dining event.

The menu for the evening was spaghetti and meatballs, chicken Alfredo, Italian salad, bread stick and a dessert of cherry cheesecake. Patrons lined up in their cars and gave their orders to Brenda Johnson. The orders were relayed to the kitchen by six-year-old Rustin Robertson and 10-year-old Jack Stratman. The two cousins were good workers and Rustin couldn’t run fast enough to let the kitchen and food line workers inside know how many meals they needed for the next car driving up. Event promoter Peggy Rowden said, “They kept us on our toes.”

Rowden said 184 people were served. The volunteers were hoping to sell 300 meals, but Saturday night was a big event night in the area.

Several items for the dinner were donated and the senior center board, staff and patrons are thankful for the donations. Argyle Catering donated the cheesecake desserts and toppings, Birmingham-Martin donated to-go-containers, G & W Foods donated salad dressing, and Fick Distributing donated Alfredo sauce. Rowden commented these businesses have donated to the event for nine years and it is much appreciated and they are thankful. She said there are other donors for food supplies that want to remain anonymous. After the event, Rowden said they deposited $2,950. This monetary amount included meal sales and monetary donations.

The Vienna Senior Center continues to serve daily meals via drive through. They are hoping to be able to have inside dining again within the next couple of months. In order to be able to open the senior center to inside eating they are required to put some Covid-19 safety measures in place for employees and those eating. The money made Saturday evening will come in handy paying for the required safety measures.
