ST. ELIZABETH — In a recent span of four days, both the Vienna Lady Eagle and Eagle basketball teams paid a visit to St. Elizabeth High School for some non-conference basketball action.

Starting Friday night, it was a junior varsity and varsity doubleheader between the host Hornets and visiting Eagles.

Nursing a 27-23 halftime lead, Mike Shelton’s Vienna JV Eagles outscored St. Elizabeth’s JV Hornets 24-22 in the second half to escape Miller County with a 51-45 victory.

Holding a 17-11 advantage after one quarter, Spencer Magner paced the JV Eagles with seven points in the first seven minutes.

Nic Collins and Cash Stricklan added four first-quarter points each while Colin John kicked in two markers.

Edged 12-10 by St. Elizabeth in the second quarter, Vienna still went into the halftime intermission with a 27-23 lead.

Danniel Casey and Collins each put in three points during the second quarter to pace the JV Eagle offense.

Overall in the first half, Collins and Magner each scored seven points to lead Vienna.

Returning the favor in the third quarter, Vienna outscored St. Elizabeth 14-11 to bump their lead after three quarters up to 41-34.

Danniel Casey led the JV Eagles with five third-quarter points.

In spite of being edged 11-10 over the final seven minutes, Vienna held on to run their current winning streak to four games and improve their overall record to 8-2 on the season.

Looking to complete the doubleheader sweep, Vienna’s varsity Eagles took on the host Hornets in St. Elizabeth.

Trailing by one going into the fourth quarter, the Eagles came up short in a 65-55 loss.

No further information was available on the varsity contest at press time.

Three nights later in St. Elizabeth on Monday, it was time for Jason Kampeter’s Vienna Lady Eagles to square off against the host Lady Hornets.

Trailing 5-3 early in the first quarter on a Kadence George 3-pointer, Vienna saw St. Elizabeth end the quarter on a 14-4 run leaving them trailing 19-7 after eight minutes of Monday night basketball in Miller County.

Unable to get any closer throughout the rest of the game, Vienna dropped their second road contest in as many Mondays by a final score of 58-27 in St. Elizabeth.

Of Vienna’s seven first-quarter points, George scored five for the Lady Eagles while Marsie Messersmith accounted for the other two on a pair of free throws late in the opening quarter.

Outscored 15-6 in the second quarter, Vienna went into halftime trailing the Lady Hornets 34-13.

Scoring all six of Vienna’s points in the second quarter, George finished with 11 first-half points leading the Lady Eagles and all scorers.

Playing the third quarter to an 11-11 tie, Vienna went into the final eight minutes of basketball from St. Elizabeth trailing the Lady Hornets 45-24.

Jada Kleffner and Terra Huffman each found the scoring column for the first time in the game with two third-quarter points apiece.

Held to three points in the fourth quarter, Vienna was left searching for their first win of 2021.

George finished with a team-high 14 points followed by seven points from Messersmith.

Huffman added four points and Kleffner rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring with two points.

Harley Engelmeyer led St. Elizabeth and all scorers with 23 points.

Vienna’s Lady Eagles will host Calvary Lutheran Friday night at 6 p.m., in their next action while their Eagle counterparts will be competing this week at the South Callaway Boys Basketball Tournament up in Mokane.

Next week, Vienna’s boys will also compete in the Iberia Tournament with games on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
