Vienna girls excel at cheer camp, some win trip with chance to cheer in faraway places

The Maries R-1 high school and middle school cheerleaders attended a Varsity Spirit cheer camp this week where they worked hard on their skills and six of them qualified to cheer in a parade at a faraway destination.

Maries R-1 cheerleader coach, Roberta Kilmer, said 20 students came out to participate in the camp and it was a very good experience. She is pleased to have five high school students and one middle school student qualify for the opportunity for a spot on the All American Team, and earning the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, Florida, or London to march and cheer in parades there.

Besides being able to perform in a world-renowned parade, athletes will have the opportunity to meet cheerleaders and dancers from across the US and enjoy a memorable trip to one of the world’s most popular cities.

Kilmer said the cheer camp is held for the cheerleaders to grow skills and stunts and to prepare for the school year. The Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) sends a trainer who works with the students for three full days. Kilmer said it rigorous training and at the end of it they invite the parents to a parent showcase when the cheerleaders try out for a spot on the All American Team and an opportunity to travel and be part of a large group of cheerleaders in a parade in a fantastic destination.

Maries R-1 cheerleaders who qualified are Ava Kloeppel, Elizabeth Veasman, Nora Garro, Camie Doyel, Claudia Wieberg and Noah Rollins.

Kilmer said those who choose to go to London will participate in a London New Year’s Day Parade. For the students who choose Hawaii, they will travel to Honolulu for National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on Dec. 7. Middle schooler Noah Rollins has the option of Philadelphia or Disney World for a Thanksgiving Day parade.

Kilmer said the cheerleaders going to faraway places will need to fundraise in order to pay for it. She said they will need the support of the community.
