RICHLAND — Opening the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 2, District 9 Boys Basketball Tournament at Richland High School Monday night, Chandler Harker’s Vienna Eagles took on Plato’s Eagles.
Vienna was going for their second win over the season over Plato after defeating them earlier this season on the road.
Held scoreless the first six minutes of the first and third quarters, Vienna hit four consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to get back within seven at 43-36 before eventually seeing their season end at 12-13 following a 45-36 loss to Plato in the opening round of districts.
Trailing 8-0 with 1:25 for the opening quarter, an Elias Miller bucket got Vienna on the board before they ended the first quarter trailing 9-2.
Down 11-2 with 7:00 until halftime, Teagan James hit a field goal to spark a 13-4 run capped by a Hunter Schwartze lay up tying the game at 15-15 entering the halftime intermission.
Plato opened the second half on a 10-0 run before Waylon Lenning stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer at the 1:44 mark of the third quarter.
Two Lenning free throws left Vienna trailing Plato 31-20 after three quarters.
Before fouling out in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Miller led Vienna with a team-high 17 points and three steals.
James also reached double figures with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Lenning hit for all five of his points in the third quarter.
Alex Zimmer and Schwartze rounded out the Vienna scoring with two points apiece.
Drew Woodruff led Plato with 21 points, seven rebounds, three steals, three assists and three blocked shots.
Porter McCabe also scored in double figures for Plato with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Plato moves on to tonight’s (Wednesday) district semifinals against the top-seeded Eugene Eagles.
Eugene enters district play ranked number one in Class 2 by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA).
