Vienna edges Belle in pitcher’s duel

STOUTLAND — Waiting around.

That is what Belle’s Tigers and Vienna’s Eagles were doing prior to their scheduled showdown Friday afternoon as part of the rain-shortened Stoutland Spring Baseball Tournament.

This came about because the previous contest between Laquey and Crocker wound up going 11 innings before Crocker pulled out a 12-11 victory.

Originally scheduled for 2 p.m., at Stoutland, Friday’s Maries County showdown did not get underway until around 3:15 p.m., due to the prior game needing extra innings to decided a winner.

Zeros were a common theme throughout the first six innings between the Tigers and Eagles with Vienna’s Bayrd Vanscoy and Belle’s Glayden Woodruff locked in a classic pitcher’s duel.

It was not until the top of the seventh inning when a Tanner Nichols doubled to left field and eventually scored the game’s lone run on a passed giving Vienna the 1-0 win over their Maries County neighbors to the east.

Vienna’s Lucas Magner was the game’s first base runner on a one-out single in the top of the second inning before he was left stranded at second base.

Belle’s first base runner came in the form of an Isaiah Sullinger one-out single in the bottom of the second inning. He moved to second on a two-out walk from Woodruff before both runners were left stranded after Vanscoy struck out one of his 13 batters during the game.

Duncan Wilkinson reached on a Belle error in the top of the third inning for Vienna advancing to third base before being left stranded.

Sam Willis started a two-out rally for Belle in the bottom of the third with a double before a Carter Kinkead walk extended it.

However, Vanscoy induced an inning-ending ground out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless through three innings.

Woodruff pitched around a two-error in the top of the fourth inning thanks to one of his five strikeouts.

Sullinger led off the bottom of the fourth with a double before two Vanscoy strikeouts and a fly out to third base left him stranded and the score remained knotted at 0-0 through four innings.

Vienna’s offense rallied in the top of the fifth inning threatening to break the scoreless tie.

Will Veasman started things off with a one-out single before Wilkinson reached on another error.

A two-out single from Eli Hayes loaded the bases for Colin John before he lined out to center field leaving the bases full of Eagles allowing Woodruff to escape the jam.

Belle also had a shot at breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Willis started a two-out rally for the Tigers by reaching on a dropped third strike.

Kinkead followed with a single before a ground out to Vanscoy ended the inning keep the 0-0 stalemate in tact through five innings.

Inning number six was full of strikes as Woodruff recorded two strikeouts while Vanscoy worked around a two-out single by his Tiger counterpart before striking out the side.

After scoring their aforementioned run in the top of the seventh inning, Vanscoy went into the bottom of the seventh inning looking to finish what he started.

Striking out the side to end the game, Vanscoy needed just 92 pitches to earn the complete game shutout scattering five hits and two walks while striking out a baker’s dozen.

Both county baseball teams return to action Friday with Cory Nicholson’s Vienna squad hosting Cuba’s Wildcats in a Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) showdown while Bryce Gehlert’s Tigers travel west on Highway 28 to Dixon to face the Bulldogs. Both contests have a scheduled 5 p.m., first pitch.
