Vienna Eagle softball slams Jamestown

Hitting the road to Jamestown for one final regular-season game, Mick Byrd’s Vienna Eagles faced off against the host Lady Eagles from Jamestown.

Behind a grand slam home run and six runs batted in from Marsie Messersmith, Vienna defeated Jamestown in a battle of Eagle softball squads by a score of 20-7 in five innings.

In addition to Messersmith’s outstanding day, Kadence George added a triple, three singles, three stolen bases and a RBI.

Eva Hollis also drove in multiple runs with a double and a single helping her record four RBIs.

Jada Kleffner joined the Vienna hit parade with two hits, three stolen bases and a pair of RBIs.

Kayla Hertzing added a hit and a stolen base while Molly Otto added a double, a stolen base and a RBI.

Karissa Feeler duplicated Kleffner with three stolen bases to go with a stolen base each from Alexi Struemph, Nora Garro and Terra Huffman.

According to Byrd, defensive highlights in the game included a great catch by right fielder Jada Kleffner running up an embankment in foul territory along with a fine catch of a high pop fly in short left field by shortstop Karissa Feeler.

Alicia Long was the winning pitcher giving up four earned run on five hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts.

There was not a junior varsity game played due to low numbers for Jamestown.

Last Thursday in a Highway 42 showdown at Iberia Vienna rallied from a 4-0 deficit after six innings by scoring five runs to take a 5-4 going to the bottom of the seventh inning.

However, Iberia used three hits and two stolen bases to plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 victory in varsity action.

Feeler led the varsity Eagles with a double, two singles, a stolen base and a RBI.

Eva Hollis kicked in a hit and two RBIs in addition to a double, a RBI and a run scored from Messersmith.

Molly Otto had a hit in addition to a hit and a run scored each from Gabby Wilkinson and George.

Kleffner and Long each scored a run in a losing cause for Vienna against Iberia.

Messersmith took the tough-luck loss giving up four earned runs on eight hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts.

In the junior varsity contest, Iberia also prevailed over their Highway 42 neighbors to the east by a score of 7-4.

Eva Hollis led the JV Eagles with two hits, two stolen bases and a RBI.

Sadie Novak added a hit, a stolen base and two RBIs.

Tori Schulte recorded a double  in addition to a hit from Kiera Hollis and a stolen base from Terra Huffman.

Defensive highlights included a pickoff from Huffman to Eva Hollis and good catches of deep fly balls from Nora Garro and Alayna Patton.

Abrea Simmons pitched two innings for Vienna’s JV Eagles giving up three earned runs on five hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Eva Hollis also pitched for the JV Eagles allowing two earned runs on four hits and no walks while also striking out two batters.

Vienna’s JV Eagles ended their season with a record of 7-4.

Last Tuesday in their final home doubleheader of the season, Vienna welcomed St. Elizabeth’s Lady Hornets to Vienna City Park.

Tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, Molly Otto started the rally with a line-drive single to center field. Pinch runner Andrea Novak eventually scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.

With two outs, and runners on second and third, clean-up hitter Karissa Feeler delivered a clutch two-RBI single before Gabby Wilkinson reached on an infield single.

The final two very important insurance runs scored on a single by Long.

The above rally helped Vienna sting the Lady Hornets 6-0.

Gabby Wilkinson led the way with three hits in addition to two hits and two RBIs from Feeler.

Long added a hit and two RBIs in addition to a hit from Otto.

Kleffner delivered a hit and a stolen base while George added a pair of stolen bases.

Messersmith helped her cause with a stolen base while Andrea Novak also scored a run for Vienna in varsity action.

Messersmith pitched a complete-game shutout giving up seven hits and two walks while also recording five strikeouts.

Looking to complete the sweep in the junior varsity game, Vienna’s JV Eagles posted a 9-5 victory over the JV Lady Hornets.

Tori Schulte doubled and drove in two RBIs while Eva Hollis also doubled and drove in a run.

Terra Huffman recorded a hit and Abrea Simmons doubled.

Jenna Wiles, Allison Buschmann, Sadie Novak and Kyleigh Logan all stole a base against the JV Lady Hornets.

Simmons pitched three innings while Eva Hollis threw the final two innings in the victory for Vienna’s JV Eagles.
