Vichy park board elects officers, plans 2021 events

Vichy Community Park Board President Roger Pruett said 2020 was a rough year for everybody, including the Vichy park. The traditional, annual events were canceled because the park board and volunteers did not want to be responsible for hosting a coronavirus spreading event.

Now, in 2021, as more and more of the population becomes vaccinated to prevent the spread of the virus, there is hope that life will return to a more pre-pandemic normal.

A new park board was elected earlier this spring. Pruett remains president and Donnie Chambers retains vice presidency of the board and together they welcome the new board members and volunteers. Ramona Chambers is the new secretary and Pat Dressendofer is the new treasurer. Board directors include Charlie Carter, Glenn Dressendofer, Dustin Elrod and Ryan and Amy Westcot.

Pruett said they welcome new members and are pleased to have younger people join them. The Vichy park, like other groups and organizations, continues to encourage and seek out more volunteers.

About 12 people came to Vichy park recently for a workday. They cut dead trees, mowed grass, and did general clean-up. Pruett said at the end of the workday it was obvious they had been there as the park looked really good.

The ball field is in good shape and Pruett said they welcome ball teams to use the field. A church group practices and plays there, which is the only group to use the ball field at this time.

Upcoming events are a community-wide yard sale on June 12. This is a fundraiser with 20x20 booth spaces available for $10. There will be a concession stand as well.

The annual July 4th event at the park with fireworks will be held in 2021. It was canceled in 2020. The first July 4th event was held at the park in 2010. Pruett said the event may be different this year as they are still working on details. They plan to begin the Independence Day event at 5 p.m. and will have a concession stand, some games, live music, and fireworks at dusk.

The Vichy Community Park’s July 4th event has been a destination for years as it’s one of the few events in the area with a fireworks display. Pruett said Donnie Chambers is in charge of the fireworks and has worked out a system to have a sustained 30- to 40-minute fireworks display.

Since its re-opening in 2010, the Vichy park has been bringing people in the area together and the board wants to continue the tradition. Persons interested in becoming a member of the community park and volunteering are encouraged to contact any board member.
