Vienna High School (VHS) Principal Ian Murray said this year they will change the process used to nominate seniors to the annual basketball homecoming court.
At the Maries R-1 School Board’s November meeting, Murray said in the past the boys basketball team members nominated the senior girls for the homecoming court and the girls basketball team members nominated the senior boys to the homecoming court.
Murray said the students want it to be more fair. This year members of the entire senior class will nominate both the boys and the girls to the homecoming court. Once those nominees are selected, the entire high school student body will vote for the homecoming queen and king.
This year homecoming is set for Dec. 18.
Also in his report to the school board, Murray informed them about the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning put on by the R-1 cross country team. It is in conjunction with the R-1 Giving Tree, which helps local families at Christmas.
He said staff members had to be very creative in educating and helping the students during the two week school closure because of virus outbreak at school and so many students being in quarantine. He said they had several students doing school work in the parking lot.
At next month’s meeting, they need to talk about graduation dates and senior trip.
