Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps will mark its 59th anniversary. In 1962, this youth organization was created to teach America’s youth the significance of maritime service in national defense while instilling a sense of pride and patriotism in our country.
Since then many Sea Cadets have gone on to serve their nation proudly in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, National Guard, and the Merchant Marine. Sea Cadets also have gone onto successful careers in industry, academia, and government.
“This is a life-changing program,” said LT Regina Kilmer of Vienna, Commanding Officer of the Thomas Jefferson Division in Jefferson City. “We take good kids and make them into great kids. They learn numerous life skills, and transform as they learn leadership traits and principles, and gain valuable leadership experience.”
Many of the 400 U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps units throughout the United States are coordinating or participating in 9/11 commemoration events in the cities and towns they live, as the nation collectively pauses to reflect and remember the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack. Cadets from the Thomas Jefferson Division are participating in, and supporting, the annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Walk/Run at the State Capitol, as well as the 9/11 Patriot’s Day Parade, which follows.
The Sea Cadet Corps continues to provide compelling, life-changing programs and training that instill the values of teamwork, discipline, camaraderie, and service through our all-volunteer force and with our strong partnerships with our nation’s armed forces. Sponsored by the Navy League, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps is for youth ages 13 through 17. Also included under the Naval Sea Cadet Corps umbrella is their junior program, the League Cadet Corps, for youth ages 10 to 13.
