Dodging the majority of the rain that washed out every other mid-Missouri sporting event last Wednesday, Dakota Mason’s Vienna Eagles had the good fortune of being able to host Plato’s Eagles for non-conference baseball action at Vienna City Park.
Tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the second inning, Vienna scored 11 of the next 12 runs helping them to a 12-2 victory in five innings last Wednesday night against Plato.
Thanks to the brotherly battery of Wyatt Wulff (pitcher) and Troy Wulff (catcher), Vienna was able to retire Plato in order during the top half of the first inning giving Vienna the chance to break the scoreless tie in the bottom half of the first.
Troy Wulff began a two-out rally reaching on a dropped third strike before eventually scoring an a Dylan Long RBI single giving the host Eagles an early 1-0 lead after one inning.
Two walks and a hit batter led to Plato’s first run of the game in the top of the second inning tying the game at 1-1.
Vienna answered that run and then some in the bottom half of the second.
Hunter Schwartze reached on an error before scoring on another error later in the inning during Reid Nichols’ first plate appearance of the game in which he walked.
Looking to start yet another two-out rally, Waylon Lenning singled extending the inning to the catching Wulff.
Two pitches later, Troy Wulff deposited a wind-aided two-run home run over the left-field fence capping Vienna’s three-run bottom of the second inning giving them a 4-1 advantage after two innings.
Pitching around two singles in the top of the third inning, Wyatt Wulff gave his Vienna offense a chance to add to their lead.
Brett Welschmeyer singled and scored on a Schwartze RBI single.
Alex Zimmer also reached base on a fielder’s choice before scoring after Zach Via reached on an error with two outs.
Lenning kept Vienna’s latest two-out rally going with a RBI single scoring Schwartze after Via scored on a passed ball during Wyatt Wulff’s latest plate appearance.
This capped Vienna’s four-run bottom of the third inning helping them to a 7-1 lead.
Setting Plato down in order during the top of the fourth, the pitching Wulff turned the ball back over to his offense looking for more run support.
Starting yet another two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth, Schwartze reached on an error before Nichols was hit by a pitch and Zach Via walked to load the bases.
Lenning was then hit by another pitch for an RBI bumping Vienna’s lead to 9-1.
Troy Wulff ran the count full during his next plate appearance before drawing a RBI walk pushing Vienna’s run total into double digits.
Wyatt Wulff then reached on Plato’s second error of the inning allowing Via to score giving them an 11-1 lead after four innings.
Looking to close out the game in the top of the fifth inning, Plato turned a walk, hit and an error into a run extending the game into the bottom of the fifth with Vienna still leading 11-2.
Welschmeyer reached base for the third time in the game leading off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk before stealing second base.
He then advanced to third base after Zimmer almost reached base on a dropped third strike.
Schwartze then reached base for the fourth time in as many plate appearances on a walk-off RBI single giving Vienna their first win in the month of April.
Vienna also won the JV game 11-2.
Hosting Jamestown Monday night in Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) baseball action at Vienna City Park, Vienna will finish out the week with a pair of SMCC road games tomorrow (Thursday) at Calvary Lutheran and on Friday at Prairie Home in a game rescheduled from March 25 due to wet field conditions.
