To the Editor:
I have been watching with great interest the articles on Maries R-I school board discussions on unpaid lunch bills.
I like board member Mike Kleffner and board member Kacie James’ comments. I attended Bend Grade school for eight years, and I took my lunch. I attended Vienna High School for four years. I took my lunch or worked in the cafeteria, so that I could eat free. I graduated in 1960. I graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 1963, received my Master’s from the University of Missouri in Columbia, and took 24 hours after that. I retired after 31 years of teaching. In 1994, I moved to Rolla.
As you can see, the Vienna school system served me well.
Yes, I came from a very poor, poor family, but we have all done well.
If I can contribute to Feed My Children, contribute to feeding poor Indian children, and contribute to other needy groups, I can surely contribute to Maries R-I students who should eat regular meals instead of being given peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drinking a carton of milk.
I believe that a student learns better if he has proper food and high self-esteem.
I am sending $2,000 to Maries R-I to help with their food program. I believe there are other individuals or organizations in the Vienna Community who could also help.
When I presented two scholarships at Maries R-I this spring, I saw outstanding students and a generous community.
We live in an area, where all students should be fed properly.
Thank you for letting me express my opinion. I wish the very best for all of the Maries R-I students.
Sincerely,
Mary (Adkins) Halbrook
