Last Tuesday at Vienna City Park, David Martin’s Vienna Middle School (VMS) and Vienna High School (VHS) cross country runners made the most of being able to run on their home course during the inaugural Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) Cross Country meet.
Once the final runner crossed the finish line, Vienna was able to keep three SMCC championship plaques and 14 medals in town.
In the middle school boys race, Vienna was the lone school field a full scoring team giving them the SMCC title with 15 points.
Paxten Jeremy won an individual SMCC title with a first-place time of 8:50.12.
Also earning All-SMCC honors for VMS’ Eagles were Eli Messersmith (3rd, 9:28.48), Gage Curler (4th, 9:51.40), Alex Wieberg (5th, 10:17.77), Dreygen Messersmith (6th, 11:01.20) and Drew Crum (7th, 11:34.15).
Jamestown’s Brent Higgenbotham grabbed the other All-SMCC spot in the middle school boys race with a second-place time of 9:05.81.
David Martin III also placed eighth for VMS’ Eagles in a time of 12:18.65.
VMS’ Lady Eagles also captured the SMCC Championship plaque as the lone scoring team in their division.
Sophia Neubert posted a SMCC title winning time of 10:35.41 for Vienna followed by Emerson Jeremy’s second-place time of 10:44.53.
Other earning All-SMCC honors in the middle school girls race were Jamestown’s Sarah Baepler (3rd, 11:29.79), Chamois’ Carly Schollmeyer (4th, 11:40.23), Vienna’s Zoe Hawk (5th, 11:52.22), Vienna’s Kaitlyn Carpenter (6th, 12:00.55) and Jamestown’s Afton Borrenpohl (7th, 12:28.81).
Also racing for VMS’ Lady Eagles were Elise Kilmer (8th, 12:36.40) and Riley McKinnon (9th, 14:35.38).
Moving to high school action, VHS’ Lady Eagles placed second in the team standings with 37 points behind Calvary Lutheran’s Lady Lions with 19 team points.
Senior Marissa Hollis was the lone Lady Eagle to earn All-SMCC honors with a sixth-place time of 23:36.68.
Rounding out the top seven and earning All-SMCC honors were Calvary Lutheran’s Sonya Brunner (1st, 18:49.20), Calvary Lutheran’s Madelynn Sprengel (2nd, 22:08.66), Calvary Lutheran’s Alayna Sprengel (4th, 23:01.72), Chamois’ Emma Mehmert (5th, 23:14.60) and Prairie Home’s Samantha Simkins (7th, 23:47.32).
Other Lady Eagles helping Vienna to a second-place team finish were Kaylee Bresnahan (8th, 24:21.47), Ava Kloeppel (13th, 28:51.80), Naomi Clark (14th, 30:30.89) and Jezabel Bordonaba (17th, 32:22.69).
VHS’ Eagles capped the day of racing topping the team standings in the varsity boys division with 27 points ahead of Chamois (40), and Calvary Lutheran (55).
Eagle sophomore Hunter Schwartze won a SMCC individual title with a first-place time of 17:07.58.
Also earning All-SMCC honors among varsity boys were Chamois’ Caleb Keilholz (2nd, 17:34.28), Vienna’s Cooper Auten (3rd, 17:34.81), Vienna’s Bryce Ewers (4th, 18:32.62), Calvary Lutheran’s Trey Ruediger (5th, 18:41.57), Calvary Lutheran’s Ben Kuhlman (6th, 19:15.57) and Chamois’ Grayson Gerloff (7th, 19:15.77).
Fellow Vienna harriers helping the Eagles to a SMCC title included Thomas Douglas (8th, 19:18.21), Kevin Russell (12th, 19:45.44), Dalton Timm (17th, 21:24.18), Ethan Rex (18th, 21:26.37), and Tyler Hallahan (19th, 21:29.17).
After running at Dixon Monday, Vienna will return to action hosting the Vienna Autumn Classic at Vienna City Park on Monday, Oct. 21 with racing to begin at 4 p.m.
