Sheriff’s Toy Project continues

Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said his office began the Sheriff’s Toy Project several years ago after seeing “the tremendous outreach for help” that needed addressing during the Christmas holiday season.

The toy project has become an innovative collaboration between peace officers, non-project agencies, private donors and businesses. Together they serve the less fortunate children and families in the Maries County communities. The sheriff said there are people in need, and there also are those in the community who want to help and are capable of giving it.

There are more hardships this year with many families losing loved one and jobs due to the pandemic. The sheriff’s office is once again asking for help from the community.

Those who are able are asked to drop off toys, clothing, school supplies or donations at the sheriff’s office. Those who are not able to come into the sheriff’s office are asked to call the office at 573-422-3381 and while the deputies are patrolling they will stop by and pick up donations.

Every year, Heitman works on Christmas Day. He will try to make it to the homes of the families who need assistance while he’s working on Christmas or on the day before.

Heitman likes this project because it’s for kids and families and it provides a connection between law enforcement, people in need, and those in the community who want to help others during the holidays.

The Dollar General Store in Vichy has begun a toy drive to support the Sheriff’s Toy Project. Toys can be purchased there and will be given to the toy project.
