JEFFERSON CITY — Bruce Sassmann officially began his service as state representative for the 62nd District after being sworn in during a Jan. 6 ceremony in the Missouri State Capitol.

Sassmann takes his place in the Missouri House of Representatives alongside 113 of his Republican colleagues, as well as 48 Democrats.

“It is a great honor to be sworn in to serve the people of the 62nd District and the state of Missouri,” said Sassmann in a release issued through the House Communications department. “Coming to work in the Capitol building helps frame the importance of what we do, and I look forward to doing the work of the people every day.”

Members of the 101st General Assembly were sworn into office by Missouri Supreme Court Justice Mary R. Russell, then elected Rep. Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, to serve as House Speaker and Rep. John Wiemann, R-O-Fallon, to serve as Speaker Pro Tem.

Sassmann replaces Tom Hurst who served four terms covering eight years from 2013 to 2020. Due to term limits, Hurst was unable to run again in 2020. Sassmann was among a half-dozen Republican candidates who sought the party’s 2012 Primary nomination for the 62nd House seat. He challenged Hurst again in the 2014 Primary.

Sassmann’s 62nd House District includes Osage, Maries, Miller, Cole, Gasconade, Crawford and Phelps counties.

The 101st General Assembly is made up of 163 representatives and 34 senators. Sassmann is one of 46 first-term legislators in the House. One House seat is currently vacant.
