R-1 district head retiring in June

VIENNA — After 29 years in the education field and three years working in the leadership role at the Maries R-1 School District, Superintendent Mark Parker informed the school board of his plan to retire at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Following the retirement and resignation letters from Coaches Mick Byrd and Ellie Glick being read to the school board at Monday night’s meeting, Parker spoke up and informed the board he will be leaving the school district as well.

Parker said he began his education career as a math teacher and a coach. It was his goal “to use my knowledge and personal skills to make a difference in students’ lives.” He worked hard every day for 29 years to meet that goal.

For him the retirement from education “is bittersweet.” He is excited about retiring from education and moving on to a different challenge, but is sad to be leaving Vienna.

“I hope you know that I have always been thankful for the opportunity you have given me to be the superintendent and become part of this great Vienna family,” he said.  He told the board he cannot say enough about the school family he has come to know at the R-1 School District. He felt welcome from the first day at the school. He complimented the staff at Maries R-1, saying they care for the kids and make sacrifices for the success of the students.

As superintendent, many accomplishments were attained. He thanked district patrons for passing the bond issue. He will be leaving with only good thoughts about the school, and will work with the school board to find his replacement.

“This is the best place I’ve ever worked. I’ve never found a better place,” Parker said.

School Board President Vicki Bade said the board accepts the retirement “with regret.” She added she’s “sad, but happy for you,” about Parker’s end of work with the district, which will end on June 30, 2021.
