Porky’Z BBQ to host Halloween parade Oct. 30

Porky’Z BBQ in Belle will host a Halloween parade on Oct. 30 with the Belle Board of Aldermen’s blessings and are encouraging the town and businesses to participate and dress up for the event.

Sheila Thomas announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page that participants will line up at 7 p.m. and the event that will begin at 7:30 p.m. will follow the city’s summer parade route. If canceled due to weather, the event will be rescheduled for Oct 2, the following weekend.

Thomas asked the board on Sept. 8 to consider a Halloween parade in lieu of a traditional trick-or-treating or even the Trunk-or-Treat events.

“Due to the COVID pandemic, we wanted to talk with the council about possibly doing a Halloween parade versus the kids going door-to-door trick-or-treating this year,” Thomas said. “I for one, as a grandparent, don’t want my grandchildren going door-to-door because you never know what you are going to find.”

The business would like to host the parade on Oct. 30 and follow the same parade route as they do during the fair.

“Have the kids dress up in their costumes that way they can still get out and show off their costumes, get the business involved, and they are still going to be able to do their trick-or treating,” Thomas said.

The Halloween parade floats would be able to throw candy so people can maintain social distancing. Thomas requested the city’s approval to close the street down during the parade and ask the Maries County Sheriff’s Department and the Belle Division to stop traffic during the parade.

“We would like to do it in the evening, just like when the kids go trick-or-treating,” Thomas said. “We would like it to be dark to use lights. We would like to encourage the businesses to dress up.”

Mayor Steve Vogt asked if the parade would be in lieu of the Trunk-or-Treat events.

“I have been in contact with Ruthie Lange over the Trunk-or-Treat and she was waiting to see what we heard from you all to see what we were going to do,” Thomas said.

Vogt said he would have made a similar point, but didn’t want to be the Grinch that canceled Halloween.

“I guess people can still do it if they feel safe with it,” Vogt said.

Alderman Jeanette Struemph asked what they will do if it rains. Thomas said they will reschedule it, but they don’t want to do it on Halloween night in case some parents do want to take their kids trick-or-treating.

“We thought maybe the night before, and then kids won’t be going door-to-door or be running the streets,” Thomas said.

Vogt asked for the board’s opinions.

“Double buy,” Struemph said.

Alderman Tony Gieck said he didn’t have a problem with it.

“I make a motion,” Gieck said.

The board approved the Halloween parade with a 4-0 vote.
