Nicholson’s Baseball Eagles score doubleheader sweep of Stover

Rained out Friday against Cuba in what would’ve been their Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) opener, Cory Nicholson’s Vienna Eagles got to take the field over the weekend in Stoutland during a varsity doubleheader against the Stover Bulldogs.

Faced with the possibility of having to play 14 innings Saturday, Vienna needed only eight to secure a doubleheader sweep.

Sending staff ace Bayrd Vanscoy to the pitching rubber in game one, the Eagle senior needed only 58 pitches for a complete-game shutout of Stover 15-0 in four innings.

After a scoreless first inning, Vienna got their bats going in the top of the second inning against the Bulldogs.

Sending 13 batters to the plate, the Eagles turned five hits, three errors, a walk and a hit batter into seven runs.

Lucas and Spencer Magner both delivered two-RBI doubles of their own to highlight the seven-run top of the second inning.

Retiring Stover in order in the bottom of the second inning, Vanscoy gave his Eagle offense a chance in the top of the third to add to their lead.

Three hits and three walks led to three runs and a 10-0 lead after three innings.

Striking out the side in the bottom of the third inning, Vanscoy kept his bid for a game-one shutout in tact.

Four hits, two walks and a hit batter led to five more Vienna runs in the top of the fourth inning pushing their lead to 15-0 and moving them three outs away from a win in game one of their Saturday twin bill.

Pitching around a one-out walk, Vanscoy struck out the side giving him nine for the game during Vienna’s 15-0 victory.

Both Magner cousins each drove in four RBIs with Lucas collecting a team-high three hits.

Eli Hayes, Colin John, Duncan Wilkinson and Vanscoy each had multi-hit games for the Eagles with two hits.

After Vanscoy scored a team-high three runs, Hayes, John, Wilkinson and Lucas Magner each scored two runs.

Serving as the home team in game two of the doubleheader against Stover, Vienna was hoping their offense would stay hot.

Putting up crooked numbers in all four innings, Vienna finished the night cap with a seven-run bottom of the fourth inning giving the Eagles an 18-3 mercy-rule victory over Stover in four innings.

Banging out 12 hits in game two to go with their 13 hits in game one, Vienna took advantage of nine Bulldog errors in the night cap helping them to a doubleheader sweep.

Lucas Magner once again led the Eagle offense in game two with a team-high three hits and three runs batted in (RBI).

Landon Kloeppel and John also drove in three RBIs for VHS in game two.

Tanner Bock also drove in a pair of runs for Nicholson’s Eagles.

Scoring multiple runs for Vienna in game two were Hayes (3), Vanscoy (3), Wilkinson (3), Spencer Magner (2) and Zach Via (2).

Via served as a courtesy runner two times in the second game when starting and winning pitcher Will Veasman reached base in both the bottom of the second and third innings.
