New session, new assignment begins Jan. 5

Posted

On Jan. 5, 2022, the Missouri Legislature will begin a new session.

Out with the old and in with the new! No legislation is carried over from one year to the next. Every year we start over.

In this coming session, the Speaker of the House has asked that I serve on another committee. In addition to the Special Committee on Small Business, Tourism, and the Conservation and Natural Resources, I’ll serve on the Consent and House Procedures committee.

This committee will define the rules of the House.

Consent and House Procedures is a bridge between the tradition of the past and the rules of our future. It is our chance to make the processes of government within the House of Representatives better. Since the beginning of every legislative journey each legislator has asked, why do we do it this way and how can we make it better. The Consent and House Procedures committee is the place to consider the value of traditions and debate a new way of doing the people’s business.

Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “If you don’t take change by the hand, it will take you by the throat.”

Change is hard for most folks. The way we’ve always done it is a mantra many of us consider to be a time-honored tradition.   Whether or not we move forward in this new legislative session in the tradition of the past or we consider a better way of doing business, our decisions will benefit from just a little bit of luck.

One tradition, according to folklore, suggests eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. This practice is thought to bring good luck and prosperity throughout the year ahead. A little bit of good luck is always welcome. You are welcome to join us at the farm on Saturday afternoon on January 1st, and we’ll share in one of those good luck traditions.

We wish you all the best in the coming year.
