Maries R-1 kindergarten teacher, Rachel Johnson, was chosen from a large field of applicants and a panel of retired teachers from across Region 7 chose her grant as one of nine to warrant her a $500 classroom grant from MRTF.

Her grant was titled, “Phonics Student Kits Lead to Successful Readers.” The grant will be used to purchase 10 Really Great Phonics Countdown Student Kits to be used with the kindergarten students and the Title 1 department at Maries R-1 Elementary School. These kits work in conjunction with Countdown phonics lessons and provide visual and tactile elements for a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction. The lessons include a one-on-one assessment of pre-coding and early decoding skills, functional vocabulary, phonological/phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, decoding, and high-frequency word reading.

MRTA is an association of retired educators whose purpose is to promote the professional, social, and economic welfare of all retired school employees while continuing to support the teacher currently in the classroom.

MRTF is a tax-exempt organization for raising funds to carry out charitable, educational, scientific, and literary purposes of MRTA. This year MRTF is giving nine $500 classroom grants in Region 7 and two PEERS Grants for a total of $5,500. The state grant total for is 126 classroom grants, and 20 $500 Maggie Elder PEERS Grants, for a total of $73,000 given by retired teachers to teachers and other school employees in the state. MRTA fundraises throughout the year to raise the money needed to present these grants to deserving public school employees.

In early September, Maries R-1 Elementary Principal Shanda Snodgrass, R-1 Superintendent Teresa Messersmith joined MRTA Region 7 officers and chair leaders, Georgia White, Martin White, and members of the Maries-Gasconade Unit of MRTA, including Elizabeth Rowden, Gail Howard, Pam James, Eleanor Terry and Katie Reenan, to honor and congratulate Rachel Johnson for securing the $500 grant.

She was given a certified check for $500, a large replica check, and a certificate of congratulations from MRTF officers and representatives. The group said congratulations to Mrs. Johnson for her outstanding grant application.
