Maries County’s number of virus cases doubles

The number of active Covid-19 coronavirus cases in Maries County has doubled in numbers reported this week when compared to the numbers reported on July 1.
The Phelps-Maries Health Department on July 1 reported seven active cases of Covid-19 in Maries County. On July 2 and 6 it reported 11 active cases, and earlier this week, on July 12, that number had doubled to a total of 14 reported active cases of the virus.
The number of Maries County deaths remains at 15.
In nearby Phelps County, the virus is surging once again, as numbers there went from 89 active cases on July 1 to 206 cases reported on July 12.
The health department said it is seeing a “significant increase” in reported cases of the virus in this area. There were 68 new cases reported on July 12 with the average age being 33.8 years old. Of these new cases, the health department said, “The overwhelming majority continue to report being unvaccinated.”
In Missouri new coronavirus cases increased 49.4 percent as 9,926 cases were reported on July 11. Missouri ranked second among the states where the coronavirus is spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, John Hopkins University data revealed.
Citizens are urged to get vaccinated as the delta variant of the virus is rapidly spreading throughout the country, infecting non-vaccinated persons. Hospitalizations are on the rise and the number of virus deaths is expected to increase.
The health department urges vaccinations and a return to wearing a mask over nose and mouth while in public places. Also continue to social distance at six feet away from others, and avoid large social gatherings. Frequent hand washing with soap and water or using hand sanitizer is encouraged. Stay home if you are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms.
