JEFFERSON CITY — Belle’s Aubrey Rehmert and a slew of Vienna High School track and field athletes converged on the Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex inside Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium over the weekend looking for top-eight finished and state medals during the 2025 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Track and Field Championships.
After county athletes competed in eight events during day one on Friday, Maries County went 4-4 in events held Saturday led by Belle junior Aubrey Rehmert winning a state championship in the Class 2 Girls Javelin.
Posting a throw of 38.11 meters on her first throw, Rehmert followed that with a mark of 40.51m on her second throw putting her in the lead throughout the rest of the competition.
Rehmert’s best throw of 42.60m came on her first throw of the finals officially giving her Belle’s first individual state championship in track and field since Susie Moman and Gracie Schultz won state titles in the Class 2 Girls Javelin and Long Jump respectively.
“I’m so proud of Aubrey seeing all of her hard work pay off with a state championship,” Belle High School head track coach Jacob Walton said.
Vienna senior Cooper Auten began day two of the state track meet competing in the Class 1 Boys Pole Vault.
Clearing 3.72m on his first attempt, Auten went on to earn his first of two state medals in the span of an hour by placing sixth in the pole vault.
Opening their day on the track, Vienna’s Eagles competed in the Class 1 Boys 4x800m relay.
Running in fourth place at the midway point of the race, Vienna’s foursome of Troy Wulff, Bryce Ewers, Hunter Schwartze and Auten posted a sixth-place time of 8:42.11 earning themselves state medals in the Class 1 Boys 4x800m relay.
Hours after Rehmert’s state title in the Class 2 Girls Javelin, Vienna’s Lady Eagle duo of Aubrey Schwartze and Ava Kloeppel looked to add to the county medal haul in the Class 1 Girls Shot Put.
Both Lady Eagles made the finals with Schwartze setting a new school record posting a third-place throw of 11.48m while Kloeppel placed fifth with a mark of 10.61m.
“It was awesome getting to break the school record here at state while at the same time earning a third-place medal,” Schwartze said. “It has been fun throwing with Ava the past couple of years and I’ll miss her next year.
Kloeppel will take her athletic talents next year to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg as a member of their basketball cheerleading squad.
“It was cool to end up on the medal stand together with Aubrey in my final event of high school track for Vienna,” Kloeppel said. “If cheerleading doesn’t work out, there’s always a possibility I could take up track at the next level.”
Friday action from Jefferson City saw the Lady Eagle quartet of Lainey Magner, Ava Smith, Jaedyn Schell and Madison Weeks just missed the finals of the Class 1 Girls 4x200m relay with a ninth-place time of 1:53.47 in the preliminaries.
They were edged out of the top eight by North Shelby who posted a preliminary time of 1:53.24.
One of five girls to clear 2.45m in the Class 1 Girls Pole Vault, sophomore Kaylee Bresnahan wound up placing 10th in the event based on missing her first attempt at 2.45m.
Had she made it on that try, she would’ve wound up in a four-way tie for seventh place with Rock Port’s Landrey Kelly, Glasgow’s Kaitlyn Monnig and Gallatin’s Tagen Eversole.
Just past the lunch hour on Friday, Kloeppel claimed the first of her two state medals following a fifth-place throw of 34.34m.
This broke her own school record allowing her to leave VHS with the farther discus throw in school history.
“It’s pretty cool that I get to end my high school career as the VHS record holder in the girls discus,” Kloeppel said.
Before competing in the Class 1 Boys 4x800m relay Saturday, Schwartze and Auten went for individual medals on day one.
Schwartze posted a 13th-place time of 2:05.21 in the Class 1 Boys 800m run while Auten placed 11th in the Class 1 Boys 1600m run in a time of 4:44.00.
Sprinting to a 12th-place time of 46.68 in the Class 1 Boys 4x100m relay was the Eagle quartet of Ethan LeStarge, Zeb Wiles, Kevin Russell and Hunter Schwartze.
Their time was just under a second shy of the top eight and a spot in Saturday’s finals.
Ending day one on the track, Vienna’s team of Hunter Schwartze, Auten, Russell and Ewers posted a 15th-place time of 3:41.93 in the Class 1 Boys 4x400m relay.
Individually, Russell was able to end his freshman season with a state medal by posting a leap of 6.30m in the Class 1 Boys Long Jump good for seventh place.
“Anytime a freshman can earn All-State no matter what sport it is. It’s pretty awesome to see,” VHS head track and field coach David Martin said. “I couldn’t be any more prouder of all of the athletes that earned their way to state this weekend. They all competed hard and left everything they had out there.”
