A long trip proved worth it for twenty high school track and field athletes from Belle and Vienna following the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 2, District 4 Track Meet held Saturday at Glasgow High School.
Vienna’s Lady Eagles showed the way for Maries County with a second-place finish in the district team standings with 93 points behind Harrisburg (136).
Sophomore hurdler Julianna Davis became Vienna’s first individual sectional qualifier on the track with a fourth-place time of 18.89 in the girls 100-meter hurdles.
Sprinting to a sectional-qualifying fourth-place time of 55.78 was the Lady Eagle 4x100m relay team of Lainey Magner, Madison Weeks, Jaedyn Schell and Aubrey Reeves.
That same foursome also posted third-place times of 1:56.71 in the girls 4x200m relay and 4:38.74 in the girls 4x400m relay respectively.
Making it a clean sweep of qualifying for sectionals in all four relay races was the Lady Eagle 4x800m relay team of Kaylee Bresnahan, Schell, Weeks and Reeves in a second-place time of 11:04.69.
Senior Claudia Wieberg will have to wait a little longer to prepare for life as a Drury University cheerleader.
That is because she placed second in the girls high jump clearing 1.44m to advance to one of four MSHSAA sectional track meets at South Callaway High School in Mokane.
She also placed second in the girls triple jump with a leap of 10.10m followed closely by Davis’ third-place mark of 9.62m.
Ava Kloeppel and Aubrey Schwartze also threw their way to sectionals in two events for the Lady Eagles.
Kloeppel placed second in the girls shot put with a throw of 10.58m followed by Schwartze in third place with a toss of 10.26m.
In the girls discus, Kloeppel took third place with a heave of 29.34m followed by Schwartze’s fourth-place mark of 29.29m.
Scoring 47 team points, Belle’s Lady Tigers will send athletes in four events to sectionals in Mokane.
Freshman Nolie Finnegan punched her first of three tickets to sectionals with a third-place time of 6:06.90 in the girls 1600m run before also placing third in a time of 2:44.77 in the girls 800m run.
Completing her sectional trifecta, Finnegan won a district title in the girls 3200m run in a time of 13:12.45.
Placing fifth earlier in the meet in the mile, Tajel McDaniel clinched her spot in sectionals with a second-place time of 13:45.29 in the girls 3200m run alongside Finnegan.
Lady Tiger sophomore Aubrey Rehmert threw her way to sectionals winning a district title in the girls javelin with a throw of 36.15m.
Nevaeh Kinsey (14th, 14.98) and Bailey Schilling (15th, 15.64) sprinted down the track for Belle in the girls 100m dash.
Brooklyn Maddox (14th, 31.42) and Chloey Bray (17th, 42.11) turned the corner for the Lady Tigers in the girls 200m dash.
Bailey Storz posted her best finish at the district meet with a 21st-place mark of 2.65m in the girls long jump.
On the boys side of the track, Vienna’s Eagles advanced 10 athletes to Saturday’s sectional meet in Mokane.
Senior Gabe Kleffner sprinted to a fourth-place time of 11.78 in the boys 100m dash punching his first ticket to sectionals.
He also took third place in the boys 200m dash with a time of 24.03.
Duncan Wilkinson (2nd, 2:05.31) and Hunter Schwartze (3rd, 2:10.67) both qualified for sectionals in the boys 800m run.
They will head straight to Iberia after the track meet to compete for the Vienna Eagle baseball team in first-round action of the MSHSAA Class 2, District 8 Tournament against Laquey’s Hornets.
Cooper Auten made it three distance-running Eagles going to sectionals placing third in 11:19.41 during the boys 3200m run while also taking fourth in 5:02.83 during the boys 1600m run.
Placing third in 1:37.99 and advancing to sectionals in the boys 4x200m relay was the Eagle squad of Eli Hayes, Brayden Ewers, Kleffner and Wilkinson.
Winning the boys 4x800m relay in 8:45.22 was the Eagle distance-running foursome of Jackson Kilmer, Hunter Schwartze, Auten and Ewers.
Ending the meet on the track with a fourth-place time of 3:58.11 was the sectional-bound Vienna boys 4x400m relay team of Dalton Breeding, Gavin Schwartze, Hayes and Ewers.
Gavin Schwartze (2nd, 3.81m) and Auten (4th, 3.66m) claimed two of the top four spots for Vienna in the boys pole vault.
Mathew Hamill posted his best individual finish for Vienna at districts with a 14th-place time of 1:09.19 in the boys 400m dash.
Thomas Douglas also posted a 12th-place time of 5:42.26 in the boys 1600m run.
Alex Zimmer scored a team point for Vienna in the boys high jump clearing 1.60m to place eighth.
Troy Wulff also collected two Eagle team points with a seventh-place leap of 5.14m in the boys long jump.
Timothy Shockley threw his way to three team points with a sixth-place mark of 12.03m in the boys shot put while Eli Crum posted a seventh-place throw of 34.85m in the boys discus.
Belle’s Tigers will send Myles Butler and the boys 4x800m relay team to sectionals after their top-four finishes Saturday in Glasgow.
Placing third in 9:15.04, the Tiger 4x800m relay team of Miles Frey, Hudson Kent, Barrett Finnegan and Baylar Smith will look to join the district champion Vienna Eagles with another top-four finish Saturday in Mokane to end their season at the state meet in Jefferson City.
Posting a pair of fourth-place finishes, Butler threw his way to sectionals with marks of 35.96m in the boys discus and 43.15m in the boys javelin.
Weston Doss posted a 20th-place time for Belle of 14.30 in the boys 100m dash while Adrien Hoehne placed 15th in 1:16.56 during the boys 400m dash for Belle.
Sprinting to an 11th-place time of 53.39 in the boys 4x100m relay for Belle was the quartet of Timothy Schmid, Callen Taylor, Brayden Barzee and Doss.
A top-four finish Saturday at South Callaway will send any Maries County athlete to the MSHSAA Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 inside the Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex at Jefferson City High School’s Atkins Stadium.
