After a challenging journey brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Linn R-2 Drama Club members are excited to present two short plays this weekend under the direction of English teacher Jesse Fick, who took over the program last year.
“Because of COVID, we couldn’t do one last spring,” said Fick, who began teaching at Linn three years ago. “I got involved with the drama club my first year, working with Sara Pike. Last spring, I took over as solo director for drama club, but because of COVID the play got canceled, and this past fall COVID took out a large part of the cast, and the play was canceled again.”
Several cast members were forced to quarantine in the fall, and the issue continued again this spring, which is why Linn is presenting two plays.
“In mid-March, we had to switch from the play we were working on since January, to these two smaller ones because some of our cast members had to bow out,” said Fick. “We have been working on these two plays since the middle of March, meeting every school day and for four hours on Sundays. The kids have really come together to make this work, and it’s pretty awesome. They have taken a lot of responsibility, developing the set, designing costumes, bringing in props, and getting these lines down in time. They deserve a lot of credit and recognition for all they have accomplished.”
First to be presented during three performances (one at school, and two for the public) will be “Alice in Cellphoneland,” by Kim L. Hubbard, with the following cast members:
— Alice: Elana Dodson
— Cheshire Cat: Rachel Latimer
— White Rabbit: Lori Kixmiller
— Dodo Bird: Laura Lange
— Mad Hatter: Aubri Atwell
— Red Queen: Emily Conley
That will be followed by “The Prince’s Liberation Union,” by Kara Jellesma, with the following cast members:
— Narrator: Justin Brown
— Prince: Mason Wolfe
— Snow White: Marissa Leivian
— Dwarf: Bella Russell
— Prince Charming: Justin Reed
— Cinderella: Faith McKim
— Evil Queen: Brendan Ely
— Prince Phillip: Laura Lange
— Aurora: Claire Helmig
— Fairy Godmother: Lori Kixmiller
The plays will be performed on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.
“This will be the first play we’ve done since the fall of 2019, so we’re pretty excited,” said Fick.
