Another district title.

That was the goal for Chandler Harker’s Vienna Lady Eagles Friday night at Southern Boone High School in Ashland in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, District 5 Softball Tournament Championship Game against St. Elizabeth’s Lady Hornets.

Leading 3-2 after six innings, Vienna found themselves three outs from another district title.

However, St. Elizabeth turned three hits, a walk and an error into three runs before eventually ending Vienna’s season handing them a 5-3 loss in the district title game.

After a scoreless first inning, St. Elizabeth turned two hits and a Vienna error into one run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Limited to a Jena Wiles single in the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Eagles struggled to get the offense going until they were trailing 2-0 going to the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wiles started the inning with a single before being retired on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Madison Weeks.

Weeks then advanced to second base on a passed ball before a Kadence George walk put two runners on with one out for pitcher Eva Hollis.

Hollis helped her own cause with a game-tying two-RBI triple plating Weeks and George.

Now tied at 2-2, the game did not stay tied for long.

Lady Eagle left fielder Riley Rosentreter delivered a RBI sacrifice fly to left field scoring Hollis and giving Vienna a 3-2 lead after six innings.

In spite of losing the lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Eagles had a chance to at least tie the game or win it in the bottom half of the seventh.

Trailing 5-3, Abrea Simmons delivered a one-out double to left field bring the tying run to the plate.

Two strikeouts later, the first season of the Chandler Harker era of Vienna Lady Eagle softball came to an end.

Taking the season-ending loss, Hollis allowed five runs (two earned) on 13 hits and a walk to go with one strikeout.

Riley Hammond earned the win for St. Elizabeth limiting Vienna to three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Last Wednesday in their district opener, Vienna took on Climax Springs’ Lady Bears at Southern Boone High School in Ashland.

Due to rain and wet field conditions in St. Elizabeth, the district tournament was moved Southern Boone’s turf field.

Trailing 1-0 after a half-inning, Vienna plated three runs in the bottom of the first and third innings in addition to six runs in the second and fourth innings of their 18-3 opening-round victory.

Kadence George had a team-high three hits for Vienna to go with four runs scores and a run batted in.

Salene George, Kayla Hertzing, Terra Huffman, Rosentreter and Weeks each added two hits for the Lady Eagles against Climax Springs.
