Jerome H. Haslag, 98, Loose Creek, passed away peacefully Friday, May 13, 2022, at Jefferson City Manor in Jefferson City surrounded by his loving family

He was born Dec.16, 1923, to the late Conrad and Gertrude (Orscheln) Haslag on the family farm in Loose Creek.

He was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Loose Creek. Jerome served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II from Aug. 14, 1944, to July 2, 1946. He served in the 79th Infantry Division. Before returning home after the war, he served with headquarters company, second battalion, 26th infantry regiment, first division for ten months as a supply clerk. Following that he worked in the German prison war camp near Nurnberg, Germany.

Jerome was united in marriage to Johanna “Janet” Schaefer Aug. 27, 1953, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn.

Jerome worked for Gerard Muenks doing farm work right after high school. Then after returning home from the war, he worked various jobs for farmers in the area and went to Veteran School under the GI Bill for three years. Jerome then worked for Martin, Lawrence, Sylvester and Herbie Backes in poultry plants as well as working his own farm until 1999. Jerome later worked at Algoa Prison as a guard.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek where he was active with the parish council and was also a member of the Linn VFW Post 4756.

Jerome enjoyed gardening, and delivering all his vegetables to family, friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, and playing Pitch and Preference.

Jerome was preceded in death by spouse of 63 years, Janet; parents, Conrad and Gertrude; grandson, Brad Curry; son-in-law, Mike Curry; brother, Hugo Haslag; and sisters-in-law, Genrose and Theresa Haslag.

He is survived by children, Paul Schaefer of Fort Apache, Ariz., Wanneta Curry and Melita Oldelehr and husband Michael, all of Jefferson City, and Bonita Verdot and husband Bill of Linn; grandchildren, Jill Regier and husband Jeff, Marcus Oldelehr and wife Lindsey, Marisa Schalhamer and husband Todd, Maribeth McCormack and husband Tom, Amanda Verdot and significant other Travis, Clayton Verdot and wife Abby and Curtis Verdot; great-grandchildren, Jet, Jace, Jayla, Sydney, Dane, Addison, Hadley, Ty, Tommi, Calli and Vance; brothers, Albert, Bernard and Conrad Haslag, Jr., all of Loose Creek; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., (today) Wednesday, May 18, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek with Rev. Anthony Rinaldo officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery.

Memorial contributions suggested to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
