COLUMBIA — David Martin’s Vienna Eagle Cross Country team along with the Lady Eagle duo of Marissa Hollis and Kaylee Bresnahan went into Friday’s Class 1 races during the 2024 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Cross Country Championships looking for a top-30 finish individually or a top-four finish as a team.

Once both Class 1 races were in the books, Vienna sophomore Hunter Schwartze was the lone Eagle who found his way on to the medal stand following his 13th-place time of 17:33.10.

“All of our kids ran their best on the state course,” Martin said. “I’m proud of Hunter for being able to get out and run his race earning himself a state medal in the process.”

Also qualifying as a team, the Eagles placed eighth with a score of 226 points behind McAuley Catholic (50), Thomas Jefferson Independent (76), School of the Ozarks (116), Hermitage (137), Van Buren (162), Kingsville (186) and Dora (188).

Running his final cross country race in a VHS uniform, senior Cooper Auten crossed the finish line in a 50th-place time of 18:31.90.

“I’m glad I was able to help my teammates get to state and to be able to end my high school cross country career on the state course,” Auten said.

Next across the finish line for the black and gold was freshman Bryce Ewers with an 82nd-place time of 19:10.50.

Bryce’s older brother Brayden is currently a freshman in college running cross country and track for the Westminster College Blue Jays up in Fulton.

Junior Thomas Douglas was the next finisher for the Eagles crossing the finish line with a 108th-place time of 19:47.30.

Fellow Eagle freshman Tyler Hallahan checked in with a time of 20:38.10 good for 139th place.

Rounding out Vienna’s trio of freshman getting their first taste of the state meet at Gans Creek was Kevin Russell who placed 155th in a time of 21:11.80.

Junior Ethan Rex was the final Vienna Eagle to cross the finish line placing 167th in a time of 22:36.60.

Schwartze was not the only boy runner from the Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) to earn All-State honors in Columbia.

Chamois senior Caleb Keilholz earned a state medal in his final cross country race as a Pirate with a 17th-place time of 17:37.40.

In the Class 1 Girls race, Lady Eagle sophomore Kaylee Bresnahan posted an 84th-place time of 24:13.40 while senior teammate Marissa Hollis crossed the finish line placing 103rd in a time of 24:48.80.

SMCC harriers also had two in the top 30 during the Class 1 Girls race.

Winning a SMCC individual title earlier this fall, Calvary Lutheran senior Sonya Brunner added a state championship to her list of accomplishments posting a winning time of 19:43.40 on the Gans Creek course.

Brunner was joined in the top 30 by Lady Lion teammate Madelynn Sprengel who posted a 28th-place time of 21:53.00.

Calvary Lutheran wound up placing sixth as a team in Class 1 girls with 154 points while MSHSAA Class 1, District 3 champion Paris placed seventh in the team standings with 155 points.
