This week the Missouri House of Representatives approved HJR 43 by a vote of 108-50. The main focus on HJR 43 would change the threshold required to approve changes to the state constitution. Currently, changes to the constitution require only a simple majority for approval. If approved by the legislature and voters, HJR 43 would raise the threshold to 60 percent voter approval for passage. This legislation will now go to the Senate for their consideration.
Crime Prevention & Public Safety
HB 301, containing legislation concerning special prosecutors, minimum sentences for offenders, law enforcement training & other criminal justice issues was voted on and passed out of committee. This legislation now goes to a Rules Committee to be evaluated.
Missouri Memory Day Observed at the Capitol
During Missouri Memory Day, which is February 1, we learned about the importance of recognizing the needs and rights of those living with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as their family members and caregivers. Approximately 120,000 Missourians currently live with Alzheimer’s. Nationally, more than 6 million Americans are living with the disease, and that number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050.
Website Launched to Help Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families
Veterans, service members, and their families now have a website they can access that is designed to help reduce the rate of suicide in Missouri. The website is www.mogovchallenge.com. The site provides general information on the team’s projects and strategic priorities, the impact suicide is having on the military community, and resources for both members of the military community and for anyone wishing to support them. The website also offers access to free online military culture and suicide prevention training through PsychArmor for healthcare providers, Veterans, employers, military family members, and others.
