Harker’s Eagles work overtime for third place at Tipton

Entering the Tipton Tournament with a 2-0 record, Chandler Harker’s Vienna Eagles looked to make it 5-0 in addition to bringing home championship hardware back to Maries County.

Dispatching Russellville 75-36 in first-round action last Tuesday, the Eagles raced out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter building a 44-26 halftime lead.

Outscoring the Indians 31-10 in the second half, Vienna moved into the winner’s side of the bracket.

Doing most of his damage in the first half, Vienna was led by Alijah Mercer with a game-high 17 points. He was followed in double figures by Nathan Kleffner with 14 points and Layne Hogshooter with 11 points.

Max Steffen, Bayrd VanScoy and Spencer Magner each just missed double digits in scoring with eight points.

Josh Casey added five points in addition to two points each from Lucas Magner and Janis Hubert.

Last Thursday, only Capital City’s Cavaliers stood between the Eagles and a spot in the Tipton Tournament title game.

Locked up in a high-scoring back and forth affair, Vienna was outscored 22-17 in the fourth quarter of their 82-77 loss to the Cavaliers sending them to the third-place game.

Similar to Capital City, Vienna had four guys reach double figures in scoring.

VanScoy led the Eagles with a team-high 25 points followed by 20 points from Spencer Magner who scored 11 of those points in the second half.

Kleffner and Hubert each added 14 points rounding out Vienna’s quartet of double-digit scorers.

Layne Hogshooter rounded out the scoring for Vienna against Capital City hitting for all four of his points in the first quarter.

Saturday afternoon in Tipton was a showdown of Eagle basketball squads for third place with the black and gold Vienna Eagles facing off against the blue and white Jamestown Eagles.

Trailing 19-18 at halftime, Vienna led 33-30 after three quarters before Jamestown won the fourth quarter 9-6 to force overtime.

Outscoring Jamestown 7-3 in the extra session, Vienna secured third-place hardware from Tipton with a 46-42 overtime victory over the blue and white Eagles.

Hitting a huge 3-pointer in overtime, Kleffner led Vienna in scoring with a team-high 10 points. Reaching double digits in scoring in all three games, Kleffner was named to the All-Tournament Team at Tipton.

Hogshooter also scored two of his eight points in the extra session.

In spite of being held to seven points against Jamestown in the third-place game, VanScoy was selected by the coaches to the All-Tournament Team at Tipton.

Spencer Magner and Hubert added six points each while Mercer scored all five of his points in the third quarter.

Nic Collins rounded out the Vienna scoring against Jamestown with four points.

Vienna will return to action Friday night at Laquey on the road against the Hornets.
