Even with no Maries County basketball teams advancing in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) state playoffs, five basketball players were recognized by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) for their play during their respective district basketball tournaments.
Following the MSHSAA Class 2, District 9 Basketball Tournaments at Laquey High School, a total of three Vienna High School athletes were recognized for their play during their respective tournaments.
On the boy’s side, Chandler Harker’s Eagles saw two of their own recognized with MBCA All-District honors after reaching the district championship game against Eugene’s Eagles.
VHS seniors Bayrd Vanscoy and Trey Snodgrass were among the 10 players selected in voting by coaches from Eugene, Richland, Crocker, Laquey, Newburg, Stoutland and Vienna.
Joining the Eagle duo on the MBCA Class 2, District 9 All-District Team were Eugene senior Caleb Walker, Richland senior Veston Fearon, Eugene senior Tyler Renn, Crocker senior David Carriger, Richland senior Daveton Fearon, Stoutland junior Luke Ash, Newburg sophomore Colten Pound and Crocker freshman Adam Newton.
Eugene wound up defeating Vienna 68-44 in the district championship game before having their season end in the sectional round after a 65-44 loss to Norwood.
On the girl’s side of the ledger, Lady Eagle senior Kadence George was Vienna’s lone selection to the MBCA Class 2, District 9 All-District Team.
Joining George was Newburg senior Claire Affolter, Crocker senior Skyeler Layman, Richland senior Miranda Moss, Eugene junior Olivia Angerer, Crocker senior Kelsey Todd, Richland senior Belle Harley, Newburg sophomore Mary Rosa, Laquey sophomore Alexis Shelton and Stoutland freshman Schoona Looney.
Crocker’s Lady Lions emerged as champions of Class 2, District 9 before seeing their season end in the sectional round against Dora.
Over in Dixon at the MSHSAA Class 3, District 9 boys and girls basketball tournaments, they were seeing red as Steelville’s Cardinals and Lady Cardinals left Pulaski County with both district championship plaques.
Maries County was represented on the MBCA Class 3, District 9 All-District Girls Team by the Belle Lady Tiger duo of Natalie Gehlert and Hali Naber.
Joining Belle’s duo earning MBCA All-District honors were Naomi Perkins (Steelville), Tobi Pennock (Steelville), Lauren Davis (Steelville), Daylan Pryor (Steelville), Aushara Hostetler (Linn), Alexa Rowden (Iberia), Laney Halley (Iberia) and Haylee Humphrey Iberia.
Steelville saw their season end in sectional action last Wednesday night after a 50-49 loss to Licking.
In spite of no Belle Tigers selected to the MBCA Class 3, District 9 All-District Boys Basketball, the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) still had plenty of representation.
Making up the All-District team on the boy’s side was Landon Mabe (Steelville), Carson Mullen (Steelville), Johnny Brice (Steelville), Conner Diaz (Steelville), CJ Thiltgen (Dixon), Drake Young (Dixon), Jacob Burns (Bourbon), Josh Burns (Bourbon), Austin Grellner (Linn) and Eli Hensely (Iberia).
John Tolly’s Steelville Cardinals also saw their season end in sectional action following a 59-38 loss to Thayer.
