Eight Maries County basketball players earn MBCA All-District honors

With basketball season in the books for Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1-3 schools, the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) released All-District teams Monday for each of their respective district tournaments contested towards the tail of end February.

Between a pair of Class 2 and Class 3 districts, a total of eight basketball players from Belle and Vienna High Schools earned spots on their respective MBCA All-District squads.

From the Class 3, District 3 Girls Basketball Tournament at Bourbon High School, the Belle Lady Tiger trio of senior Victoria Busch, junior Anastyn Lansford and junior Aubrey Rehmert earned three of the 10 spots on the All-District team.

Lady Tiger head basketball coach Nathan Lansford was also named the District Coach of the Year.

Racking up 67 points in two games during the district tournament, Lansford was also named the District Player of the Year.

Prior to her 37-point outburst against Bourbon in the district semifinals, Lansford’s previous season-high in scoring came in mid-December with a 31-point effort against Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs.

On the glass, Lansford grabbed a season-high seven rebounds against St. Elizabeth’s Lady Hornets during the Eugene Girls Basketball Tournament.

Handling the basketball the majority of the time, Lansford recorded at least one assist in all but two games she played.

She dished out a season-high six assists in a 50-33 victory over Bourbon just prior to Christmas break.

Defensively, Lansford posted a season-high eight steals twice in games against Bourbon and Dixon.

For the season, Lansford led the Lady Tigers averaging 18.7 points, 2.8 steals and 2.4 assists per game.

Busch scored in double figures during seven games of her senior season.

She posted a season-high 20 points against Vienna in a 69-46 victory over the Lady Eagles during the Eugene Girls Basketball Tournament.

Busch was also second on the team with seven rebounds and two assists per game.

Her best game on the glass came just after New Year’s Day with 14 rebounds in a 50-46 victory over Steelville.

She also dished out a season-best four assists in three games against Vienna, Prairie Home and New Bloomfield.

Defensively, Busch recorded a season-high six steals against Maranatha Baptist during the Stoutland Girls Basketball Tournament following a 46-13 victory.

Leading the Lady Tigers with 7.3 rebounds per game, Rehmert reached double digits on the glass six times with her season-high of 12 rebounds coming against Bunker in mid-February.

Rehmert also grabbed 11 rebounds in four games against Versailles, Dixon, Eugene and Vienna.

Chipping in 5.3 points per game, Rehmert’s season-high in the scoring column came against Bourbon with 16 points as part of a 50-33 victory just before Christmas break.

On defense, Rehmert recorded six steals twice in games against Fatima and Maranatha Baptist.

From the MSHSAA Class 3, District 8 Boys Basketball Tournament at Belle High School, the Tiger junior duo of Garrett Gehlert and Hank Stratman earned MBCA All-District honors.

Leading the team with 13.6 points, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game, Gehlert posted a season-high 22 points against Prairie Home while also grabbing a season-best 14 rebounds against Prairie Home.

Gehlert also reached double digits on the glass with 11 boards against Newburg and 10 caroms in a Highway 89 showdown with Linn.

He dished out a season-high seven assists in three games against Bourbon, Iberia and Newburg.

Defensively, he had a season-high five steals against Bourbon to go with two blocked shots in action against Russellville and Iberia.

Stratman was second on the Tigers with 10.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Reaching double digits in 21 games, Stratman scored a season-best 28 points against Iberia while pulling down a season-high 13 rebounds against Steelville.

He dished out four assists twice against Missouri Military Academy (MMA) and Iberia while collecting four steals during Hermann Tournament action against St. Clair and New Haven.

Stratman also blocked a season-high two shots against Linn.

Down in Laquey at the MSHSAA Class 2, District 9 Girls Basketball Tournament, Lady Eagle junior Aubrey Schwartze was the lone MBCA All-District selection for KC Curler’s Vienna squad.

Averaging a team-leading double double of 17 points and 12 rebounds per game, Schwartze recorded a season-high double double of 35 points and 18 rebounds against Belle in the annual Battle of Maries County girls basketball game.

Scoring in double figures during all but four of their games, Schwartze surpassed 1,000 points for her Vienna High School (VHS) girls basketball career with a 27-point effort against Cuba.

She nearly had a triple double two games into the season recording 15 points, 12 rebounds and a season-high eight steals against New Bloomfield.

Mainly camped in the post, Schwartze also handled the basketball some dishing out a season-high six assists against Calvary Lutheran in Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) girls basketball action.

Patrolling the paint, Schwartze also blocked a season-best four shots in action against Salem, Iberia, Bunceton and Richland.

In addition to the two aforementioned double doubles, Schwartze recorded 15 more double doubles giving her 17 for the season out of 26 games.

In the MSHSAA Class 2, District 9 Boys Basketball Tournament at Richland, Vienna’s duo of senior Alex Zimmer and sophomore Teagan James represented Chandler Harker’s Eagles on the MBCA All-District Team.

James led the Eagles averaging 13.6 points per game while placing second on the team with 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2 steals per game.

James posted a season-high 26 points against Iberia while also pulling down a season-best 12 rebounds against Plato.

Adding 11 rebounds against Iberia, James posted a double double against the Rangers in Highway 42 basketball action.

As a guard, James occasionally brought the ball up the floor and dished out a season-best eight assists against Calvary Lutheran in SMCC action.

Defensively, James recorded a season-high six steals against Hermitage in addition to a pair of blocked shots in action against New Haven, Iberia and Tuscumbia.

Second on the team in scoring behind James averaging 13 points per game, Zimmer led the Eagles averaging 7.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots per game.

Reaching double figures in all but six games during the season, Zimmer scored a season-high 21 points twice in action against Jamestown and Tuscumbia.

His best game on the glass came in the season opener against Richland in which he grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked eight shots.

He also reached double digits on the glass with 12 rebounds and Laquey in addition to 11 boards against New Haven and Newburg.

All of these players are also eligible for All-State honors from the MBCA which will be voted on later this month.
