Easter district work period

The Easter District Work Period has been a very productive one around the Third District. Being home in Missouri and getting to catch up with many of you is my favorite part of the job. While the bill writing gets done in Washington, D.C., talking to real people about real issues spurs the bill ideas we develop. Hearing from you directly helps me serve you and your families that much better, and I always appreciate getting your feedback on what is working and what can be improved upon.

Earlier this week I had a great visit at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Peters where I got the opportunity to discuss and see in action the latest lifesaving technologies and techniques they’re using to keep our community healthy. I was able to see technology called a neurointerventional biplane table that was designed to diagnose and treat neurological disorders like strokes and brain aneurysms. Along with one single injection of x-ray dye, doctors are able to use this biplane table to get a clear look at the brain, arteries and spine with much greater ease. It was incredible to watch, and we are fortunate to have doctors in our area who are so up-to-date on the latest and greatest in medical technology and methods that help save lives.

On a separate occasion, the Mid-Missouri Military Officers Association officials hosted a meeting where we discussed how we can provide the best support for Missouri troops and veterans. We specifically spoke about supporting combat-injured servicemembers and mental health for veterans. Our state is home to more than 400,000 veterans who have risked their lives to defend our freedom. The least we can do is ensure they have the best care and support here at home, and I am committed to doing everything I can to make that possible.

I have always been a strong supporter of small businesses in our District as they are our main job creators and keep the Missouri economy humming along. In my role as the top Republican on the House Small Business Committee my interest has grown even stronger. I recently got to visit Diode Dynamics in St. Charles which is a small business that began in the owner’s garage in 2006.  Now they employ 90 people. It’s a true American success story. Among other things, Diode Dynamics develops the latest in lighting technologies for automobiles, and they are committed to manufacturing here in the US and creating Missouri jobs.

Another notable stop was a visit to the Washington City Council meeting in Franklin County. After more than a decade of service to the Washington community, Mayor Sandy Lucy is retiring. Mayor Lucy was dealt a tough hand, taking office right in the wake of the 2008 recession, but quickly proved she was not afraid of a challenge. She is an exceptional leader who has helped grow and reinvigorate Washington during her tenure, with new businesses opening and significant population growth throughout her time in office. I was proud to present Mayor Lucy with a celebratory letter that will be submitted to the Congressional Record to thank her for her service. Her dedication and commitment to Missouri values will be sorely missed.

Traveling around in the District to meet with constituents allows me to bring a fresh perspective to Washington, D.C. This is valuable time that I always enjoy, especially now that spring has sprung (for the most part) here in Missouri, and it has been great to catch up with so many of you.
