Eagles slay Bunceton in SMCC opener

Vienna High School’s Allen Gymnasium served host to a historic sporting event Monday night.

Chandler Harker’s Vienna Eagle basketball team hosted Bunceton’s Dragon in the first ever boys basketball game of the newly formed Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC).

Scoring the first 13 points of the game, Vienna went on to an 82-11 victory over the visiting Dragons from Cooper County in which all 10 uniformed Eagle basketball players scored at least two points.

Vienna senior Alex Zimmer scored eight of their first 13 points before Bunceton sophomore Aaydin Zimmerman scored the first points by a visiting team in SMCC boys basketball history with a basket at the 5:35 mark of the first quarter.

Other SMCC firsts occurring in the first quarter by a home team included Vienna’s Hunter Schwartze with the first steal, Vienna’s Waylon Lenning with the first made free throw and 3-pointer to go along with Vienna’s Jayce Bertoni with the first offensive and defensive rebounds.

Bunceton freshman Brenton Williams also grabbed the first offensive and defensive rebound by a visiting player in SMCC boys basketball history.

Eagle sophomore Teagan James also dished out the first assist in SMCC boys basketball history on Zimmer’s first bucket of the game at the 7:50 mark of the first quarter.

Eight different Eagles found the scoring column during Vienna’s 38-point first quarter led by Zimmer’s eight points followed by Dylan Long (7), Lenning (6), James (6), Chase Weeks (4), Eli Crum (3), Jaiden Hayes (2) and Bertoni (2). 

Leading 38-2 after one quarter, Vienna outscored the Dragons 19-2 in the second quarter giving them a 57-3 halftime lead.

In addition to hitting the first two-point field attempt by a visiting player, Zimmerman canned the first free throw by a visiting player for the Dragons at the 3:36 mark of the second quarter.

Dragon sophomore Tristen Stull posted the first blocked shot by a visiting player in SMCC boys basketball action.

Zimmer led the black and gold with 14 first-half points followed in double digits by Long with 11 points and James with 10 tally marks.

After Vienna scored the first 12 points of the second half, Bunceton freshman Gabe McKnight made more SMCC history by hitting the first 3-point shot by a visiting team with 2:40 for the third quarter.

Long recorded the first blocked shot by an Eagle at home in the third quarter.

By the time the final buzzer sounded 13 of the 15 players in uniform from Vienna and Bunceton found the scoring column.

Zimmer led the Eagles with 19 points and five rebounds followed in double figures by James, Lenning and Long all with 13 points apiece.

James and Long each dished out four assists.

Bertoni added eight points to go along with five points and five assists from Crum.

Weeks scored four first-quarter points while also pulling down five rebounds.

Elias Miller added a second-quarter 3-pointer for three points to go along with three steals and two assists.

Hayes and Schwartze rounded out the Eagle scoring with two points apiece.

Schwartze recorded a team-high five steals while Hayes added three steals and three rebounds to his two points.

McKnight hit a pair of second-half 3-point shots to lead the visiting Dragons with six points followed by three markers from Zimmerman and two points from Stull.

Stull also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Dragons.

After playing Dragon slayers, Harker’s Eagles will look to play the role of Hornet stingers this Friday night on the road in Laquey with a 6 p.m., start for JV action.
