Eagles, Lady Eagles look ahead to 2022

Wrapping up the 2021 portion of their respective seasons last week, Kevin Schwartze’s Vienna Lady Eagle and Chandler Harker’s Vienna Eagle basketball teams looked to end them with a notch in the win column.

Last Tuesday on the road in Cole County, Harker’s Eagles faced off against Eugene’s Eagles.

Playing without senior big man Trey Snodgrass, Vienna held their own for three quarters.

That was before Eugene lit up the scoreboard for 33 points over the final eight minutes to hand Vienna just their third loss of the season by a score of 69-51. The loss also snapped a six-game winning streak.

Starting in place of Snodgrass, Danniel Casey led the black and gold Eagles with six first-quarter points helping Vienna to a 13-12 lead after eight minutes of basketball in Cole County.

Second-quarter action saw Spencer Magner account for Vienna’s lone bucket while Eugene doubled their point total from the first quarter to go into halftime with a 24-15 lead.

Limited to five first-half points, Bayrd Vanscoy caught fire to start the second half scoring 10 of Vienna’s 21 third-quarter points helping them draw even with Eugene at 36-36 with eight minutes of basketball left in Cole County.

Unable to answer Eugene’s offensive outburst in the fourth quarter, Vienna will have to wait until district time to get another crack at the red and white Eagles.

Vanscoy led Vienna with a team-high 20 points followed also in double digits by Casey who scored a dozen points with six each in the first and fourth quarters.

Cash Stricklan and Max Steffen each added six points in the second half to go with five points from Lucas Magner.

Harker’s Eagles will open the 2022 portion of their season on Friday, Jan. 7 hosting St. Elizabeth’s Hornets with a 6 p.m., start time for the junior varsity game.

Six days removed from their first victory of the season, Schwartze’s Lady Eagles looked to make it two in a row last Wednesday on the road at New Bloomfield against the Lady Wildcats.

Going for consecutive wins for the first time since defeating Dixon and Stoutland last December, Vienna carried a 31-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Outscored 20-9 over the last eight minutes, the Lady Eagles missed 10 free throws in the fourth quarter before falling 49-40 to New Bloomfield.

Edged 12-8 in the first quarter by the Lady Wildcats, Vienna was led by Kadence George with six points.

Doubling up New Bloomfield 16-8 in the second quarter, the Lady Eagles went into halftime with a slim four-point lead.

Kadence led Vienna with 10 first-half points followed closely with six markers from Madison Weeks.

Outscored 9-7 in the third quarter, Vienna still managed to hold on to the lead entering the fourth quarter behind four third-quarter points from Brooke Mercer.

Not able to capitalize on their numerous trips to the free-throw line, Vienna saw their bid at consecutive victories to close 2021 come up nine points short.

Kadence George led the Lady Eagles and all scorers with a game-high 12 points.

Mercer nearly joined the elder George in double figures scoring all nine of her points in the second half.

Salene George and Weeks followed with six points each the Lady Eagles against New Bloomfield.

Jaelee Stricklan scored all four of her points in the second quarter while Aubrey Reeves rounded out the Vienna scoring against the Lady Wildcats with a third-quarter bucket for two points.

Vienna’s Lady Eagles will open the 2022 portion of their season in the Calvary Lutheran Girls Basketball Tournament on Friday, Jan. 7 in first-round action against the St. Louis Lady Knights with a tip time of 4:30 p.m., at Calvary Lutheran High School (CLHS) in Jefferson City.

A loss will send them to the consolation side of the bracket on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Trinity Lutheran School while a Friday win would keep them at CLHS on Saturday.
