Fresh off an 11-1 victory in five innings over Tuscumbia’s Lions in their season opener Friday night at Vienna City Park, Dakota Mason’s Vienna Eagle baseball team ventured south into Dent County for a pair of Saturday contests against the host Salem Tigers and Cuba Wildcats.
Falling 8-4 in the first game of their Saturday twin bill against Salem, Vienna bounced back against their former Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) rivals with an 8-5 win over Cuba behind a four-run fourth inning.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the first, Vienna wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard against the Wildcats.
Zach Via drew a leadoff walk before Troy Wulff drew walked after running the count full to move Via 90 feet.
A Brett Welschmeyer RBI sacrifice bunt scoring Via put the Eagles on the scoreboard.
Wulff later scored when Reid Nichols reached on an error trimming Cuba’s lead to 3-2 after an inning of baseball from Salem.
Pitching in relief of starter Mason Via, Wyatt Wulff kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard over the next three innings giving the Eagle offense a chance to take the lead against Cuba.
Tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning, Wyatt Wulff led the frame off with a single before scoring on an error during Waylon Lenning’s at bat.
After pitching around a walk, an error and a hit batter in the top of the fourth inning, Wyatt Wulff gave his Eagle offense a chance to take their first lead of the game against Cuba.
Looking to help his own cause, Wyatt reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Retired during a fielder’s choice off the bat of Zach Via, Wyatt eventually saw his Eagle teammates give him a lead.
Lenning delivered a RBI single scoring Zach Via putting Vienna in front 4-3.
Welschmeyer and Dylan Long reached on consecutive Cuba errors with two outs before the both scored on a two-RBI single off the bat of Nichols giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead after four innings.
Troy Wulff then relieved Wyatt pitching the final three innings of Vienna’s 8-5 victory over Cuba.
Vienna scored their final run of the game against Cuba in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hunter Schwartze reached on a Cuba error before scoring on a Wyatt Wulff RBI ground out.
Wyatt Wulff earned the win pitching three and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball allowing just one hit to go with two strikeouts.
Lenning led the Eagles with two hits, a run scored and a RBI.
Nichols also drove in a team-high two runs on one hit.
In their 8-4 loss to Salem, Vienna committed eight errors making all eight Tiger runs unearned.
Lenning took the tough luck loss allowing seven unearned runs on six hits to go with a walk and seven strikeouts over four and a third innings pitched.
Doing most of their damage against Salem in the top of the fourth inning, Vienna scored three runs on a hit, four walks and an error.
Lenning started the frame with a one-out single before scoring when Zach Via walked with the bases loaded.
Troy and Wyatt Wulff also walked and scored for Vienna in the top of the fourth.
Vienna scored their final run against Salem when Alex Zimmer walked and scored on a Nichols RBI single.
Welcoming Tuscumbia’s Lions in the regular season and Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) opener, Vienna overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring 11 unanswered runs helping them to a mercy-rule victory in five innings over the visitors from Miller County.
Down 1-0 after an inning, Vienna tied the game in the bottom of the second when Long singled and scored on an Alex Zimmer RBI double.
Vienna added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning with four runs on two hits, three errors and a walk.
Nichols walked to lead the frame off before scoring when Zach Via reached on an error to put the Eagles ahead for good.
Lenning and Troy Wulff later double and scored helping Vienna to a 4-1 lead through two innings.
After getting the start, Nichols was relieved throughout the remainder of Vienna’s 11-1 win by Wyatt Wulff, Long and Mason Via.
Wyatt Wulff earned the win since he was on the mound when Vienna took the lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning, Vienna got runs from Hunter Schwartze who was hit by a pitch and Nichols who singled.
Both runners scored on a Lenning 2-RBI double with two outs.
Ending the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Long and Zimmer both walked and scored while Schwartze reached on an error and scored.
Jaiden Hayes scored the final run of the game when Welschmeyer drove him in on a walk off RBI single.
Lenning led the Eagles at the plate with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored.
Long, Schwartze and Nichols each scored a team-high two runs.
Vienna hit the road last night (Tuesday) in SMCC diamond action against Prairie Home and will continue SMCC road action on Monday, March 31 against St. Elizabeth at 5 p.m.
Mason’s Eagles will return home on Wednesday, April 2 hosting Plato’s Eagles at Vienna City Park at 5 p.m.
