Ending the month of April with a 7-0 loss at the hands of Eugene’s Eagles, Dakota Mason’s Vienna Eagle baseball team looked to open the May portion of their season with a notch in the win column Friday night against Laquey’s Hornets at Vienna City Park.
Plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning, Vienna gave starting pitcher Evan Simmons more than enough run support helping him earn the win during Vienna’s 11-1 victory in five innings.
Retiring the visiting Hornets in order in the top of the first inning, Simmons gave his Eagle offense a chance to get on the scoreboard first.
Vienna’s first five batters reached base with Jaiden Hayes leading off by reaching on an error.
Waylon Lenning was the hit by a pitch before a Troy Wulff walk loaded the bases for his younger brother Wyatt Wulff.
Reaching on Laquey’s second error of the inning, Wyatt Wulff allowed Hayes to score getting Vienna on the board.
Lenning scored to make it 2-0 Eagles on a Brett Welschmeyer RBI single.
Hunter Schwartze then delivered a RBI sacrifice bunt plating the elder Wulff bumping Vienna’s early advantage to 3-0.
Dylan Long capped the five-run bottom of the first inning for the Eagles with a two-RBI single scoring Wyatt Wulff and Welschmeyer.
Scoring was halted until Laquey turned a walk, hit and an error into their lone run of the game in the top of the third inning.
Vienna wasted little time getting that run back and then some in the bottom half of the third.
Wyatt Wulff led the frame off with a walk before Welschmeyer reached on an error and Schwartze walked to load the bases.
Long and Caden Kelley then drew bases-loaded walks scoring Wyatt Wulff and Welschmeyer respectively.
Schwartze scored Vienna’s final run of the inning on a Hayes RBI ground out giving the Eagles an 8-1 lead through three innings.
Pitching in relief of Simmons, Zach Via retired Laquey in order in the top of the fourth inning allowing the Eagle offense a chance to add to their lead.
Back-to-back singles by the Wulff brothers and Schwartze’s second walk of the game loaded the bases with one out.
Long then drew his second walk of the game forcing Troy Wulff in to score.
Wyatt Wulff then scored on a Zach Via RBI ground out moving the Eagles into double digits with a 10-1 lead after four innings.
Troy Wulff then worked around two walks before striking out the side in the top of the fifth inning.
Pinch-hitting for Hayes to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Reid Nichols walked before a Welschmeyer walk-off RBI single ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule after five innings with Vienna taking the 11-1 victory.
Simmons earned the win pitching two and two-thirds innings allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk to go with four strikeouts.
Welschmeyer and the Wulff brothers each had two hits and two runs scored for the Eagles.
Long also drove in a team-high fours for Vienna on a hit and two walks.
Scoreless through three innings against Eugene back on Monday, April 28, Vienna saw the visiting Eagles plate six runs in the top of the fourth inning before falling 7-0 to their Cole County opponents.
Zach Via had two of Vienna’s four hits against Eugene while the Wulff brothers each had one.
After road games today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) at New Haven and Iberia respectively, Vienna will close their regular season next week on Monday with a senior-night showdown against Belle’s Tigers at Vienna City Park before hosting Dixon’s Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 13.
Both the Belle and Dixon contests will have a 5 p.m., first pitch for varsity action.
