Diamond Eagles open spring season with two home wins

There’s no place like home.

That line from a certain classic movie has proven true thus far for Cory Nicholson’s Vienna Eagle baseball team.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day last Friday by taming Tuscumbia’s Lions 13-1 in five innings, the black and gold looked to make it two wins in as many games Monday night facing Bourbon’s Warhawks in the opening round of the Stoutland Spring Classic at Vienna City Park.

Trailing 2-0 before their first crack on offense in the bottom of the first inning, Vienna was able to hang a pair of crooked numbers on their Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) foes early in their 8-2 victory over the visitors from Crawford County.

Giving up two runs in the top of the first, Eagle starting pitcher Will Veasman helped his own cause in the bottom half of the inning.

Eli Hayes started the frame with a one-out walk followed by a Landon Kloeppel single that put runners at the corners.

Tanner Bock lifted a RBI sacrifice fly to center field scoring Hayes getting Vienna on the scoreboard.

Later in the inning, Troy Wulff drew a two-out walk and was replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Zach Via.

Looking to help his own cause, Veasman lined a 3-1 pitch to right field for a two-RBI double giving Vienna a 3-2 lead after one inning.

Striking out the Warhawks in order in the top of the second, Veasman once again turned to his offense in the bottom half of the second to give him a lead.

Tanner Nichols drew a lead off walk before a pair of fielder’s choices advanced him to third base.

Duncan Wilkinson and Hayes both reached on the aforementioned fielder’s choices loading the bases for Kloeppel.

Lining an 0-1 pitch into center field, Kloeppel drove in Nichols and Wilkinson giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead.

During Bock’s latest at bat, Kloeppel was caught stealing second base but Hayes alertly scampered home helping Vienna to a 6-2 lead after two innings.

A scoreless third inning led to another chance at some insurance for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Gavin Schwartze reached on an error before scoring on another miscue later in the inning bumping Vienna’s lead to 7-2 through four innings.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, Vienna added one more insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth when Kloeppel walked and scored on a Veasman RBI triple.

Pitching six innings while allowing just two runs on three hits, Veasman picked up the win for Vienna allowing four walks while striking out 12 Warhawks.

Helping his own cause at the plate, Veasman led the Eagle offense with two hits and three runs batted in.

Sam Rowden and Kloeppel also had two hits for Vienna.

Friday against Tuscumbia, Vienna scored six runs in the first and four in the second inning before going on to a 13-1 mercy-rule victory in five innings.

Veasman also earned the win against the Lions pitching three innings of hitless, scoreless baseball while striking out five batters.

Bock led the Eagle offense against Tuscumbia with three runs scored, two walks, two RBIs and a base hit.

Wulff and Wilkinson recorded multi-hit games for the black and gold with two hits each.

Following the conclusion of the Stoutland Tournament, Nicholson’s Eagles will open regular-season play on Monday, March 27 on the road in Miller County against St. Elizabeth’s Hornets at 5 p.m.
