Deputies hunt Dixon man after high-speed chase

BELLE — The Maries County Sheriff’s Department was searching for a suspect yesterday afternoon who fled the scene of an accident following a high-speed chase that began in Pulaski County. He was not apprehended by The Maries County Advocate’s deadline.

The driver, later identified by the Dixon police chief as Anthony Russell, was operating a Chevrolet 2500 Duramax pickup truck on Feb. 7 when he fled from police. He was traveling near Highway HH and Maries County Road 621 when he wrecked near the junction and fled on foot.

Deputy Major Scott John said the pursuit began in Dixon city limits.

“Someone called in suspicious activity and the Dixon police chief went to make contact with him and he fled,” John said. “They ran his plates and figured out who he was and continued that chase.”

Russell is wanted on a no-bond warrant out of Cole County in Jefferson City for a parole violation.

John informed the public on Sheriff Chris Heitman’s Facebook that a pursuit that began in Dixon traveled into Maries County around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

“The male subject, believed to be Anthony Russell, was last seen in the woods east of Highway HH and Maries County Road 621 junction,” John said. “He was reported to be favoring his ribs as he ran and is possibly injured. Dixon police have returned to their venue and Maries County still has numerous units searching the area.”

John commented on the extensive damage to the vehicle.

“The right side where it is damaged is where it bounced off a tree and the driver’s side door is horseshoed so he has got to be hurt,” John said. “We pulled out of the area around 3:20 p.m. this afternoon.”

Neighbors are also keeping an eye out for the driver. A patrol car was stationed in the area until the school buses were able to finish dropping off students. John said the remaining officers were released for dinner and expected to return to the area until nightfall.

Russell was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie.

“If you seen anyone matching this description or anyone suspicious in the area please contact our dispatch at 573-422-3381,” John said.
