EUGENE — Leaving Cole County with consolation hardware and avenging an earlier loss to Russellville’s Lady Indians.

Those two things were square on the minds of KC Curler’s Vienna Lady Eagle basketball team Friday night going into the consolation championship game of the Eugene Girls Basketball Tournament against Russellville.

Falling 51-42 against the Lady Indians prior to Thanksgiving, Curler’s Lady Eagles trailed 52-51 with 2:28 remaining Friday night before a Madison Weeks 3-pointer at the 1:43 mark of the fourth quarter gave Vienna a 54-52 lead they would not relinquish before going on to a 58-54 victory giving them consolation hardware from Cole County.

“I’m so proud of the girls for the way they battled and avenged their loss to Russellville earlier this season,” Curler said.

Surviving six lead changes and a tie in the first quarter, Vienna escaped the first eight minutes with a 14-12 lead over the Lady Indians.

Limited to an Aubrey Reeves bucket and two Jaedyn Schell free throws in the second quarter, Vienna saw Russellville go on a 13-4 second-quarter run leaving them with a 25-18 halftime deficit.

Sparked by an Ella Hollis bucket to open the second half at the 7:36 mark of the third quarter, the Lady Eagles opened the second half on a 9-0 run giving them a 27-25 lead with 5:35 for the third quarter.

Briefly trailing 29-27 on an Audra Whittle bucket for Russellville, Aubrey Schwartze canned a 3-pointer sparking a 10-2 run at the 3:13 mark of the third quarter helping Vienna to a 37-31 lead with eight minutes standing between them and bringing consolation hardware back to Maries County.

Battling through three ties and nine lead changes in the fourth quarter, Curler’s Lady Eagles emerged victorious in spite of Schwartze and Hollis saddled with foul trouble most of the night.

Scoring 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, Schwartze also pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds for the victorious Lady Eagles.

Doing most of her damage in the second half, Weeks also reached double figures scoring 14 of her 16 points in the second half.

Jaedyn Schell nearly made it a trio of Lady Eagles in double figures finishing with nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Ella Hollis scored all eight of her points in the second half overcoming foul trouble throughout the first half.

Aubrey Reeves and Marissa Hollis each added two points to round out the Vienna scoring against Russellville.

Addie Brizendine led three Russellville Lady Indians in double figures with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Jenna Schulte and K’Lea Basnett each added 13 points for the Lady Indians.

Basnett completed a double double adding 11 rebounds to her 13 points.

During their 69-46 consolation-semifinal victory over Belle last Tuesday, Aubrey Schwartze led four Lady Eagles in double figures with 17 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots.

Schell netted 14 of her 16 points in the first half while Weeks scored all 11 of her points in the first half.

Ella Hollis completed the double-digit quartet with a near triple double of 10 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.

Marissa Hollis added five points all in the fourth quarter in addition to pulling down four rebounds.

Aspyn Gorman and Reeves each chipped in four points while Kenna Roberds rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring against Belle with two points in the fourth quarter.

Victoria Busch led the Lady Tigers against Vienna with a game-high 20 points followed in double figures by Anastyn Lansford with 15 points.

First-round action last Monday for Vienna against Linn’s Lady Wildcats saw them trail 33-13 at halftime before being held to two second-half points during a 56-15 loss in Eugene.

Aubrey Schwartze led the Lady Eagles against Linn with 10 points and six rebounds.

Weeks added three points to go along with a point apiece from Ella and Marissa Hollis.

Ella nearly finished with a double double adding 13 rebounds and nine assists to her one point.

Nicole Grellner paced Linn scoring all 13 of her game-high points in the first half.

Vienna’s Lady Eagles will return to action with a road trip along Interstate 44 this Friday night in Laquey against the Lady Hornets as part of a hoops tripleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
