Charles Edward VanHandel, 81, of Dixon, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, at his residence.

He was born October 6, 1941, to Cornelius Donald and Laura Carolina (Haffman) VanHandel at Little Shoot, Wis.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean (Adkirson) VanHandel,

Charles served in the U.S. Army from1960–63, when he was honorably discharged at Fort Leonard Wood, at the rank of Private First Class (E-3). He was a member of Mid-Rivers Seventh-Day Adventist Church, St. Peters; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5517, Winfield; American Legion in Wis.; Volunteers for Veterans; and the Masonic Lodge. Charles was employed by Boeing Aircraft Corporation, St. Louis, as an aircraft mechanic, prior to his retirement.

He was preceded in death by wife, Phyllis; son, John Wayne Powell; grandsons, Daniel Sutherland and Brandon DeBord; parents Cornelius and Laura; siblings, Gloria Managan and Cornelius VanHandel; and brother-in-law, Walter Hacker.

He is survived by children, Brenda Powell of Foley, Robin Sutherland of Winfield, Laura Ratliff, Cynthia Griffin and husband David all of Dixon, Sandra Harrison and husband Ken of St. Robert, Tawnya VanHandel of St. Peters, and William VanHandel-Penfield of Doolittle; siblings, Mitzi Hacker of Green Bay, Wis., Ken VanHandel and wife Pat of Cedarburg, Wis., and Gary VanHandel and wife Sam of Menasha, Wis.; and 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday (today), Jan. 25, from 10–11 a.m., in the Mid-Rivers Seventh-Day Adventist Church, St. Peters, with his funeral service following at 11 a.m. in the church with Rev. Dean Cordin officiating. A private family inurnment ceremony will be held in the Star Hope Cemetery located in Lincoln County near Elsberry.
