Finishing up the annual Bland Lady Bear Basketball Tournament Friday night, both the host Lady Bears and Vienna Lady Eagles had a shot at hardware during the final night of the tournament.
Turning back Cuba and Steelville during pool play, KC Curler’s Vienna Lady Eagles earned a spot in Friday’s championship game opposite Salem’s Lady Tigers.
Playing to an 18-18 halftime stalemate, Vienna was outscored 28-21 in the second half of their 46-39 loss to Salem in the championship game leaving them settling for second-place hardware.
Alexis Curtis led the Lady Eagles with 16 points followed in double figures by Scarlett Weeks netting seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Macie Rowden also scored all six of her points in the second half followed by four points from Liberty Rowden and three points from Katie Kloeppel on a second-quarter 3-pointer.
Maddie Mercer led Salem with a game-high 19 points followed in double digits by Clara Ball with 14 points.
Nursing a 14-12 lead over Steelville after three quarters last Thursday in pool play, Vienna outscored the Lady Cardinals 13-7 over the final six minutes of their 27-19 victory.
Netting seven of her team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter, Macie Rowden led the Lady Eagles in scoring against Steelville.
Curtis added six points followed closely with five points from Weeks and three markers from Liberty Rowden.
Kloeppel also chipped in two points.
Opening the tournament last Monday against Cuba, Vienna turned a 26-2 halftime lead into a 43-6 victory in a match up of black and gold clad squads.
Weeks paced Vienna against Cuba scoring 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.
Curtis also finished in double figures with 15 points.
Splitting their pool games with a win over Bourbon and a loss to Salem, Jacob Walton’s Bland Lady Bears found themselves matched up with Steelville’s Lady Cardinals in the third-place game Friday night at Bland.
Trailing 13-9 at halftime, Bland edged Steelville 21-19 in the fourth quarter but came out on the wrong end of a 38-33 final score.
Natalie Lansford led all scorers netting 14 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter for Bland. Riley Gehlert added eight points while Charleigh Elrod capped Bland’s scoring against Steelville with a fourth-quarter free throw for one point.
Brooklyn Thomas led Steelville with a team-high 21 points against Bland.
Down 15-9 at halftime in pool play last Thursday against Salem, Bland was outscored 20-11 in the second half of their 35-20 loss to the Lady Tigers who went on to win the tournament.
Gehlert paced Bland scoring all seven of her points in the second half.
Lansford was limited to five first-half points before fouling out in the second half.
Shae Buechter added four second-half points followed by two apiece from Madelyn Lange and Elrod.
Opening the tournament last Monday with a 28-21 win over Bourbon, Lansford led the Lady Bears with 12 points followed with seven points from Elrod.
Gehlert and Buechter each chipped in four points while Emrie Fredendall rounded out the Bland scoring against Bourbon with a third-quarter free throw for one point.
Bland’s Lady Bears return to action today (Wednesday) hosting Bourbon’s Lady Warhawks in the annual daytime doubleheader between the two schools with a scheduled high noon tip time.
