Belle Livestock Committee receives two grants, settled livestock barn debt

The Belle Livestock Committee received two $2,500 grants — one from MFA Incorporated Charitable Foundation through the Owensville MFA and the second through CoBank Sharing Success Match Program — $5,000 total.

Dawn Hicks is the secretary-treasurer of the livestock committee.

“Dough Baumgartner said they thought we would be a good match for the CoBank Sharing Success Match Program, which we were and it finished paying our loan off,” Hicks said.

The group submitted their application last month.

“We did the grant in October and were told that we got it around the first part of November,” Hicks said.

Hicks said the funds will be used to pay off the remaining loan on the livestock barn. The committee had taken out a loan in 2019 to finish constructing the building.

“The cattle barn was around $35,000,” Hicks said. “We had saved money for it and then had to borrow the rest.”

The committee had saved about $20,000 through fundraisers and donations for the upgrades and borrowed the remaining $15,000 to complete the project.

“We had $5,055.63 remaining on the loan, so it paid for the majority and we paid the rest,” Hicks said. “We paid all but the last $10,000 on our own. We did the majority of the work ourselves.”

Since the project has been paid off faster than expected, Hicks said they don’t have immediate plans for upgrades to the facility located at Belle City Park.

“As of right now we haven’t talked about it,” Hicks said. “Our first priority was to get the building paid off. We do an upgrade every year. We haven’t discussed on yet now that we have this paid off.”
