VIENNA — At the Maries R-1 School Board’s reorganization meeting, President Vicki Bade and Vice President Penny Schoene both were reelected to the leadership roles on the school board.

Bade, at the beginning of the meeting, said she appreciates the time she spent as president of the board, adding, “Thank you so much.”

When the floor was opened for nominations, Dave Long nominated Bade as president and Matt Novak gave the second and the board approved her for another year of service as president.

Dave Garro nominated Schoene to continue as vice president and Mike Kleffner gave the second and the board approved. Bade said she looks forward to a great year.

Paula Schwartze was nominated as secretary of the board on a motion by Bade and a second by Novak, and Terry Snodgrass of The Maries County Bank was nominated as treasurer on a motion by Bade and a second by Long and the board approved both motions.

Also at the special reorganization meeting, the board approved the recent school board election results. David Long received 224 votes, Kacie James received 181 votes and Joseph Barnhart received 170 votes. Long retained his board position for another three years, and James is a newcomer to the board who will serve a three-year term. Matt Novak ran unopposed and received 257 votes. His is a one-year term, completing the term of Cindy Petershagen, who moved out of the school district.

The board also approved Elementary Counselor Alyssa Smith as a tenure staff member. Superintendent Teresa Messersmith said Smith has worked at Maries R-1 for four years, and she brought two years of experience with her. This was overlooked at the last meeting.

The board accepted the resignation of special education paraprofessional Debbie Wagner, who is retiring. They wished her a happy retirement. Messersmith said Wagner will be missed.
