I was excited to hear testimony on Wednesday evening in the Special Committee on Tourism on Representative Tim Taylor’s House Bill 1672.
This recently filed piece of legislation is intended to name Archery as the Missouri State Sport. We have many symbols to represent our great state, but no state sport. Representative Taylor choose arch-ery because of the number of Missourians engaged in this sport.
Nearly 800 Missouri schools participate in the National Archery in Schools program, and thousands of sportsmen take to the woods with bow in hand in an attempt to hunt and harvest wildlife each year. Nearly everyone can participate in the sport of archery, competition shooting, or hunting.
The compound bow was even invented by a Missourian — a man named Hollis Wilbur Allen. This puts Missouri in a unique place to designate archery as our official state sport. The compound bow has transformed the industry worldwide, and it all started right here in the Great State of Missouri.
