Switching conferences for the first time in nearly 40 years proved to be worth it for Dakota Mason’s Vienna Eagle baseball team.
After recent voting by coaches from Show-Me Central Conference (SMCC) schools St. Elizabeth, Prairie Home, Calvary Lutheran, Jamestown, Tuscumbia and Vienna, the Eagles had four players selected to either the All-SMCC First Team or Honorable Mention list.
Junior Troy Wulff led the Eagles in nearly offensive statistical category with a .379 batting average, .538 on-base percentage, 1.090 OPS (on-base plus slugging), .552 slugging percentage, seven doubles, one home run, 16 runs scored and five hit by pitches.
Second on the team with 22 hits behind Waylon Lenning’s total of 24 base hits, Troy had a season-high two hits in four games against Belle, Stoutland, Prairie Home and Laquey.
His lone home of the season came against Plato along with a season-high three runs batted in (RBI).
Among his 19 stolen bases good for second on the team behind Hunter Schwartze’s total of 23 swiped bags, Wulff stole a season-best three bases against Iberia.
On the pitching mound, Troy struck out a season-high eight batters against Stoutland while recording 27 strikeouts over 23 innings pitched.
Troy’s younger brother Wyatt Wulff was also an All-SMCC First Team nod.
Wyatt was second on the team with four hit by pitches and 15 singles while also being tied for second on the team with Dylan Long also having 10 RBIs.
Of his 15 hits, Wyatt had two hits in three games against Laquey, Calvary Lutheran and Prairie Home.
He also drove in a season-best three RBIs against Calvary Lutheran in SMCC action.
Also seeing time on the pitching rubber, Wyatt pitched 25 and a third innings recording 20 strikeouts with a season-high four coming in outings against Otterville and Plato.
Rounding out Vienna’s trio of All-SMCC First Team selections was Lenning.
Leading the Eagles with 24 hits, 19 singles and 11 RBIs, Lenning recorded a season-high three hits against Tuscumbia with two of those being doubles against the Lions.
He also drove in a season-high three RBIs against the Lions from Miller County.
Pitching a team-leading 34 and two-thirds innings, Lenning struck out 38 batters while allowing 31 runs (18 earned) on 36 hits and 23 walks.
Lenning recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in outings against Salem and St. Elizabeth.
Joining the Vienna trio as All-SMCC First Team selections were senior Gavin Williams (St. Elizabeth), junior Eli Kemna (St. Elizabeth), senior Brady Kemna (St. Elizabeth), senior Jackson Pitts (Prairie Home), sophomore Will Kuhlmann (Calvary Lutheran), senior Wyatt Case (Prairie Home), junior Ty Dedrick (Jamestown), senior Noah Chipman (St. Elizabeth), junior Brayden Schoenthal (Jamestown), sophomore Anthony Coonce (Jamestown), junior Sam Luetkemeyer (St. Elizabeth), senior Blayne Williams (Prairie Home), sophomore Bryan Buechter (Tuscumbia), senior Cody Kollmeyer (Calvary Lutheran), junior Ethan Schoenthal (Jamestown) and senior Tate Duncan (Jamestown).
Senior Zach Via rounded out Vienna’s All-SMCC quartet as a Honorable Mention selection.
Tied for third on the team with 13 runs scored and three hit by pitches, Via recorded a season-high three hits against Dixon which all turned out to be singles.
Driving in a season-best two runs against Dixon and Calvary Lutheran, Via also scored a season-high three runs against the Lions from Calvary Lutheran.
Brett Welschmeyer also scored 13 runs for the Eagles while Mason Via and Reid Nichols were also hit by a pitch three times.
All-SMCC Honorable Mention selections along with Via include sophomore Brody Miller (Prairie Home), sophomore Kyson Green (St. Elizabeth) and sophomore Braylon Schulte (Calvary Lutheran).
All-District selections for the Eagles will be highlighted in next week’s Advocate after the conclusion of Eugene’s season during this week’s 75th Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Baseball Championships in Ozark.
