Vienna places third at Calvary Lutheran

Opening the 2019 portion of their season over the weekend at the Calvary Lutheran Girls Basketball Tournament in Jefferson City, Jason Kampeter’s Vienna Lady Eagles took on St. Paul Lutheran (Farmington) in first-round action Friday night at Trinity Lutheran School.

Tied at 13-13 after one quarter, Vienna outscored St. Paul 29-11 the rest of the way to post a 42-24 victory advancing them to the winner’s side of the bracket at Calvary Lutheran High School.

Using a 14-3 second-quarter run, Vienna went into halftime with a 27-16 lead before holding their opponent to eight second-half points.

Kamryn Hayes paced the Lady Eagles with a game-high 12 points. Jordyn Steffen also reached double figures with 10 points to go along with a team-high five rebounds.

Kendra Iven drilled a pair of first-half 3-balls for six points followed by five points from Jena Schwartze.

Karissa Feeler dished out a team-high five assists to go with three steals, two rebounds and two points.

Semifinal action Saturday morning matched the Lady Eagles up against Metro East Lutheran (Illinois).

Leading 20-14 at halftime, Vienna was held to nine second-half points before falling to the third-place game 41-29.

Kadence George led the Lady Eagles with eight points to go along with six each from Feeler and Hayes.

Iven added to her six-point effort in round one by pulling down six rebounds in the semifinals.

With third-place hardware on the line, Vienna took on the host Lady Lions on their home floor at CLHS.

Trailing most of the game, the Lady Eagles tamed Calvary Lutheran 13-4 in the fourth quarter to post a 41-33 come-from-behind victory earning third place.

Renee Logan and Hayes both just missed double figures with nine points apiece.

Averaging nine points a game during the tournament, Hayes was selected to the All-Tournament Team at Calvary Lutheran for helping the Lady Eagles collect third-place hardware.
